Private work earnings

in Cutting tax
Hi there,
I have a quick question that I'm sure someone here can answer for me.
I am full-time employed and earn £16,000 per year. I will have made about £2920 in private work (web development) not included in my annual wage.
Is this extra money something that I need to tell HMRC about? I am unsure if this is within my allowance or if it's on top of that...?
Tax stuff is hugely confusing!
Thanks in advance for any help on this.

Blondebubbles has given you the links that you need. But to respond specifically to this question, yes it is, and if they find out that you haven't told them after you should have then you'll end up owing a lot more than just the tax that is due (which should be around £600, although there may also be some NI to pay too).0 -
Which tax year are you saying this is in. 2013/14 or 2014/15. If it is the current tax year 2014/15 then you have lots of time to sort this. A letter to say a one off of however much will sort it. If this is ongoing then self assessment would be the way to go. If it is the tax year 2013/14 you may have a problem as you need to register and get all the codes through in far too short a time. You will get a better response if you can give that info.0

Hi,
Thanks for responding!
I finished an IVA about 4 months ago so am making sure I don't get into any more financial issues as I have been great with managing money for the past 5 ish years!
I am full-time employed and do a little extra work on the side but this past year it seemed to be more than usual.
The £2920 from various projects (all web) started coming in on the 23rd April 2014. After it building up I realised I need to do something...
I used to be self employed and spent the last couple of years battling HMRC to stop sending me self assessment stuff to which they agreed I didn't need as I was no longer self employed. I understand you keep filing returns a while after you tell them you are not self employed. That's all sorted, but now I probably need to open it all up again?
I can't foresee me making this amount on the side again in a year but it's hard to tell. It's all word of mouth through friends so it's unpredictable but the past few months have been particularly busy.
Before this I was just sending self assessment forms back with no earnings and nothing to pay.
Hope that's more info!
Cheers.0
