Help with hospitalisation

Hi
Im writing on behalf of my uncle and auntie, and im really sorry if im on the wrong topic

My uncle has just been taken into hospital and has now been told he will never be able to drive the HGVs that he drives for work. There is no other suitable jobs at the firm for him.
They are really panicing about paying the mortgage. They don't receive any benefits at all. My Auntie is 61 years old and my uncle is 63
Ive been looking all over the place for some advice but cant really find anything apart from SSP. Im advising her to go to the CAB but does anyone know anything that I can pass on now?
Thanks for any help you can give :)

If paying the mortgage is an issue. Speak to the lender immediately. The lender should grant a period of time which will allow your Uncle and Aunt to make long term plans. This may require difficult decisions to be made.
  • Thanks for your quick reply!. Im feeling so bad for them, it was only last year they lost their son to a brain tumour, now they are going through really hard times.
I'll pass on your advice x

Is there much outstanding on the mortgage?

It might be worthwhile to explore the scope for early retirement on medical grounds for your uncle. How good a pension does he have in place?
But a banker, engaged at enormous expense,
Had the whole of their cash in his care.

  • Thanks for both your ideas. I am going to call my Auntie and ask about his pension. I doubt it'll be a very good one though as it was only my Uncle that worked.
I don't think they owe a huge amount on their mortgage now, I will find that out too.
Im trying to sort out all sorts at the moment and my head is spinning with it! None of it is for me, just trying to help others:)

Most HGV driving jobs are never that well paid !!
Your uncle is only 2 years away from retirement and your Aunt may already be getting her state pension ( I hope)
If your uncle cannot work due to his illness he may get DLA and your Aunt may become his carer !!
Time to sit down with them both and look at the books!!
Check with lender current mortgage debts and any savings.
    Good Luck

If he has to give up work he should be able to put a claim in for ESA, he would be able to add your Aunt for a joint claim... with it could come extra help but it depends on the award being contribution or income based. CAB will be able to advise.
