Dental implants.

Hi all require two front implants to replace to botched crowns done 30 years ago. Constant infection in one of them. Have been advised old crowns need removed, and a bridge fitted for 6 months to clear infection. Then implants fitted. Anyone any experience of getting implants, and suggest where to have it done. I live in East Antrim, but willing to travel to have job done well.
Thanks

Has the dentist not suggested a place to have it done?

Being referred by the dentist to a place he knows and trusts is usually the best way.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.
  • Thanks for your reply Toothsmith. Yes, I have been to the place the dentist suggested. It's just I would like a second opinion.

    Fair enough.

What was it about the first opinion you didn't like though? The front upper teeth are quite tricky to make the gum look good - particularly if there has been failing crowns for years. So if he was telling you there would be a few difficulties to overcome, he was probably right.

Personally I'd want somewhere local and trusted - ideally my normal dentist if they offer the service.
There are numerous appointments (to have implant, the get impression done, then get crown fitted, then checked) and aftercare required.

I've only had one implant put in (not the crown yet) and I think they underplayed the discomfort - although it's short term and worth the long term benefits. So if they tell you that you might be a "bit sore" then expect to feel like you've been punched for a week. Forewarned is forearmed :-)
Don't get me wrong, I think it's well worth it long term, but personally I'd cope with it better knowing the worst rather than having people play it down.

Lisyloo how long did the whole process take? Did you get a temporary denture while waiting for the crown?
  • Hi,
has anyone had dental implants recently? I need 2 - upper back/ one each side.

I'd really appreciate some ( NI) recommendations and an idea of the cost and what to expect.

Looks like £2500 each - have checked online info for Cranmore, Creative Smiles, Moira dental, Braden .
    Not very MSE!

It is at least 6 months between extraction and implant.
There is a gap between implant and impression to give time for everything to settle.
It takes 2-3 weeks between impression and fitting the crown. That's just h
The turnaround time and nothing to do with your teeth.

No I did not have a denture but I guess it depends on where it is.

    That's about right.
Having an implant you will feel no pain as anaesthetised, you might have several injections.
Afterwards you might feel like someone's punched you in the jaw for a few days but ibuprofen will deal with inflammation pain pretty effectively.
My pain ranged from virtually nothing to taking ibuprofen for a week.
There's a lot of drilling and you'll feel some pressure at times.

Expect quite a few appointments for implant, impression, crown fitting and checkup (so 4).
Expect to do high levels of hygiene and a lot of checkups for maintenance (my dentist recommends 4 times a year).

They are brilliant though. Because they are custom made the crowns fit perfectly right away.
  • Does anyone have any experience of cheaper dental implant services? There's one called DentalCarePlus who claim to be 40% cheaper than the average, but I have not the first clue as to the standard of their work, and I know that a lot of people have had trouble with dental implants and had to have them removed because they failed so badly.

I will probably need an implant soon so I have to get onto this sharpish and find out if I can or can't get the same standard of dental work for lower price. I would rather pay more for guaranteed good work, but £2000+ is a hell of a lot of money.

Can you afford it is not?
Gut instinct says that 40% off will not produce the same quality. Whether that is the quality of materials, advice, cover, aftercare I don't know but I think you should research very carefully before buying a but price product.

Why would you go cut price when you know so many people have had problems?
