Europe rules percolators must shut off after five minutes (Telegraph)

Clearly, an emotive press headline: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/shopping-and-consumer-news/11320629/Tepid-coffee-anyone-Europe-rules-percolators-must-shut-off-after-five-minutes.html

"New networked devices like routers, hubs, modems, connected or smart televisions and printers should be able to switch automatically into a low power standby mode if no main task is performed."

Personally, there are devices that I would like to remain fully powered-up, particularly routers, ethernet power-line adapters, communication hubs, iBoost, internet radio. And I do like to have my espresso machine on warm while I'm at home during the day.

As long as this remains a "should" and not a "must" then let them meddle away. Self important bureaucrats.

The whole EU thing has become ridiculous. Who the hell voted for these idiots to meddle in our country? What? No one did?! How can that be?! :rotfl:

2.5 kWp PV system, SSW facing, 45 Deg Roof. ABB Inverter, Monitor: 'Wattson'.
Reg. for FIT Nov 2011. "It's not what you generate; it's how you use it that matters". One very clean Vauxhall Diesel Sri, £30.00 Road Tax: B)

Definition of 'O's = kWh/kWp (kWh = your daily & accurate Generation figure) (kWp = the rated output of your PV Panels).

I would have thought the power saving on a router is so pitiful as to not be worth the hot air wasted legislating on it. A heater plate is worth thinking about due to the power used but there has to be a balance - heating it up again from cold to make a fresh pot may not be an overall energy saving.

Not only that, but technically, it's a very bad thing to do.

I run a webserver on mine, so I don't want it shutting down obviously.

The other issue that ADSL works by slowly increasing the line speed every 24 hours until errors are seen, at which point it drops back the speed slightly, thus providing you with the maximum speed your individual line is capable of. If continual errors are seen it will drop back to a default, slower speed. So clearly if the router is going to power off all the time your ADSL line will never reach it's maximum potential.

Sack the lot of them and invest the billions saved in a shiny new nuclear plant.

I think you've probably misunderstood this.

For example, if you are using a router then "its main task" is to provide internet communications so it wouldn't automatically go into stand-by mode.

I'd be more than happy with it going into stand-by mode if no devices were talking to it though.

PS - If you don't like EU Bureaucracy you know who to vote for in May!
  • It says
    should be able to switch
    , so I don't see a problem with that.

As for certain EU regulations, they are agreed with all the members. You may not agree with workers' rights and might prefer that we waste energy and pollute to our heart's content but leaving won't be the panacea some people like to make out.

Far better to be in there helping make the rules. We'd still have to obey many of them if we were out. Not sure Nissan or Honda or BMW would be too impressed either, to name just a few companies.
