Fruit for smoothies

I have read on here comments from people who have bought a smoothie maker which has been found a new home at the back of the cupboard with other useless gadgets.
Yes, many people, inducing me have been suckered into buying gadgets that turn out to be not for them. The top complaint seems to be they take a lot of cleaning.
Thats odd because I once nearly bought one and read quite a few reviews. Most of them said how easy they were to clean.
From what I remember they seem to be nothing more than glorified blenders. In which case they are very easy to clean. Just rinse the jug, add clean water and switch it back on. Bingo, it cleans its self. The other thing i've heard people complain about is it takes a lot of fruit to make a drink, so are expensive.
That would depend on the individual and what fruit/how much they used.
I have tried smoothies from recipes on the net and found they were far to thick. So now often make watery smoothies/strong fruit flavoured water with my blender.
It's also a good way of using up fruit that is past it's best, especially the stuff you get from Morrisons for 9p a kilo!If you want all the 'goodness' of the fruit, why not just eat it rather making a drink from it ?
They say it is digested quicker, therefore you get an energy boost quicker if it is liquidised. Also many people have dodgy stomachs so smoothies are easier on their digestive systems.
When I was doing Taste Radar, and getting £25 of free fruit and veg a month I got sick of the sight of fruit. That's when I looked into getting a juicer or a smoothie maker. In the end I just chucked some fruit in my blender and added some water.
That's when I discovered you can drink a lot more fruit than you can eat, and it's a lot easier on the stomach.
It's also a great way of using up odd bits of leftovers that you don't want to eat. I chuck all sorts into my blender with the fruit and veg. I just think "Well the worst that can happen is I'll spit it out, but you never know, corned beef and melon might be nice".0
