I'm new here so don't know if this has been covered, but why don't the site admins simply restrict the ability of users to send PMs to more than one person at a time?
If they can't do that on this vBulletin board then just create another usergroup, make it able to use PMs, then set an auto-promotion to move users to it after 30 posts.
At the same time stop the 'normal' default registered group from sending any PMs.
Result is that no one can send PMs until they have made 30 posts, by which time they should have been identified as spammers and removed anyway.0 -

Ineffective really because they will just re-route through a different server, and even if they aren't using a proxy their ISP will change their specific IP fairly frequently meaning you only block it temporarily. To be effective you have to block out an entire higher node which can mean shutting out anyone who shares a server with them.
The auto-promote group option is the most effective solution because it only inconveniences newbies for a short period.
I only reply to this as I just properly joined the site yesterday and have already had a spam PM from 'AntiMartin'.0 -

You did exactly the right thing. No one can tell what's at the end of a link without following it themselves so no one can tell you if it's safe. Simply reading the message will not do you or this site any harm but just carry on deleting them before you even have time to be curious and all will be fine.

We could do with a 'report this message' button in the message folder. I too have been plagued.Don't lie, thieve, cheat or steal. The Government do not like the competition.
