I don't eat meat, its possible to do a paleo type diet that's not meat heavy, people can be veggie/vegan and follow a paleo style diet, its just whatever works for you as you said above.0

I used to be 18st, in just over a year, I was 9st.
I did it by learning. There are no miracle diets, there are no 'new' things that work. Infact, 'new' things are the problem in the first place.
Eat CLEAN. Nothing processed, nothing that's pre-prepared.
Also, learn where food comes from - for example, we shouldn't even be eating potatoes, they were originally rather poisonous! Why are we eating them these days when they're a massive contributor to obesity? They're everywhere fatness is - same with flour, it's everywhere fatness is.
Pizza - flour
Chips - potatoes
Burgers - flour (bun)
Cake - flour
Then the dreaded S word. Refined sugar is devil food.
Eat naturally, only ever fast in the 3 hours before you sleep, but never go hungry.
It worked for me, and works for people who stick to it - but people rarely stick to it as their cravings for stodge get too much.
During my weight loss, started in 2006, I started marathon training (on a crosstrainer because I can't run due to knees) and eventually was able to go full-pelt for a good 2 hours. Who ever saw a fat professional marathon runner?I can't add up.0 -

To be fair, if people want to eat flour, they don't need to eat pizza, cake, and burger buns. I'd always advise people to eat sweet potato instead of potato but now and then isn't a problem. People don't get obese by eating very little, in general. They eat too much, they don't keep a food diary, they underestimate what they are eating. I didn't get obese by eating an occasional pizza or a portion of potatoes now and then, I got obese because I ate too much, too much crap stuff, too big portions of the healthy stuff. I eat junk food occasionally. If I go out for a meal and I want a plate of chips or a pizza I'll have it. That plate of chips or pizza won't make me obese again, because I do enough exercise and my overall diet is good enough.
Junk food is addictive, there is no doubt about that. But its not the flour or the potatoes that will get someone obese, its the frequency of consumption and the quantity.
Plus what's added to them. You bake a potato and add tuna and salad, compare that to a huge pile of cheese and coleslaw.
I have a family member who has never had a weight problem in her life, she will eat chips a couple of times a week, she eats potatoes a lot. But her diet is on the whole balanced and she eats sensible portions.
Supersized portion sizes are a major reason why people put on weight. Junk food in itself doesn't get people fat, otherwise everyone who ate it would be obese. That's not the case.0 -
Totally agree with purpleshoes - junk food can be addictive. But the more often you eat the good stuff, the less often you'll feel the need to eat the junk.No longer a spouse, or trailing, but MSE won't allow me to change my username...0

Fasting is not healthy, full stop. Anyone who doesn't see that needs to think a little harder.
Dieting isn't always about eating less, it's about eating the right stuff when you're hungry. That means less processed food, more vegetables/fruit and healthy snacks.
Cutting down on the amount of processed sugary products (sweets, fizzy drinks, sugar in your tea etc) alone can help you lose a stone over a year.
The second part is get more cardio - doesn't mean running a marathon but it does mean walking more and increasing your general activity. The 5k nine week plan is good but won't suit everyone.
Don't be fooled by the headlines of some weight loss programmes. Anyone can pay a 'specialist' to agree with whatever they want. A proper daily diet is whats needed for energy and general mental health.:santa2:0 -
I am trying to lose weight also. I would not say I am on a diet, I have just chosen to eat healthier and will do for the rest of my life. I have completely cut out bread from my diet as it does not agree with me and I now have gluten and wheat free bread instead. I thought wholemeal bread was better than white because that was all I ate but oh no! I am now a pescatarian too (I have been before, about 5 years ago, but a family member made a meat dish and I immediately gave in!)
I was guilty of eating large portions of food also. So I have taken to purchasing alot more fruit and vegetables. If I am feeling peckish, I will snack on grapes and carrot batons. No more sweets, crisps, takeaways again!
I also cannot have milk as that really upsets my stomach so I have to have a milk alternative. No cheese, yoghurt or anything else dairy wise.
I was given chocolate at Christmas but I didn't have them because I am serious about not taking in anymore junk food.
No more processed foods, everything we eat now will be freshly made. I have stocked up on fish, lentils, chick peas etc. I have not been tempted once with other people's lunches. However, when I see people at work eating bread I say to myself "How can they eat that?!" LOL0 -

If you cut everything out of your diet thats unhealthy you may end up giving in and eating lots of it. Many people including some of the healthiest people I know live by the 80/20 rule, meaning they eat healthily 80 per cent of the time and have a treat or two the rest.
I don't crave takeaways but I'll have one a few times a year. I will also go out and have a meal on occasion. At christmas I had some wine, some crisps and some chocolate.
You don't have to have treats now and then, but even a few times a year won't do you any harm.
If I want the occasional packet of crisps, I'll have them. I probably have two packets a month. I used to eat at least one packet daily generally more.
Clean eating is fine, but even the fittest and healthiest people have a splurge now and then. Your now and then might be different from mine or theirs, but the very occasional bag of crisps, or bar of chocolate isn't going to cause you any harm diet wise.0
