Hi all,

I've been lurking in the shadows of this forum for a while now and after taking some great advice on managing and tackling my debt, I have decided to embrace the debt free wannabe thread and post to chronicle my journey in clearing my debt in 2015 and also get some top tips from my fellow debt free wannabes!

Ok, so here's my story...hands up, I was a very reckless student and despite putting myself financially through university and working several jobs, my budget control was virtually non existent, which is where it all started! Maxing out overdrafts and borrowing money left, right and centre!

Long story short...4 years after graduating I've finally started to tackle the mountain of debt I've come to acquire and after having a lucky break over the Xmas period (letter from HSBC with a £1400 rebate on interest overcharges on a personal loan) I've decided to make sure 2015 is a debt free one....so here's the damage:

Santander CC: £900
Santander OD: £450 - current account
Halifax OD: £900
HSBC OD: £400 (now £0 after paying it off yesterday...small victory!)
Loan: £8000 (£240 a month with 2 years left)

Summary of statement of affairs:
Monthly income: £2200
Rent: £640
House bills: £65
Phone: £50
Loan: £240
Gym: £42
Travel: £100
Total left after deductions: £1063

However, I never ever seem to have anywhere near as close as to that figure left over after bills and I always tend to struggle due to a lack of budget and self restraint so my debt never gets tackled and I usually end up with only a bunch of hangovers and restaurant receipts
To show for my money!

My plan for 2015 is as follows:

£200 per month on credit card (4.5 months and it should be clear)
Reduce Santander OD by £50 each month and leave it at £100 for emergencies
Keep HSBC OD at £50 for emergency
£100 Halifax OD each month (9 months and should be clear -close account as it was my student account)
Continue to pay £240 month for loan

Monthly repayments total at £350 (not including loan which is already budgeted for) leaving me with £713 disposable income each month (on paper).

What is everyone's advice on how I can stick to this plan and not get tempted by booking holidays, clothes, make up etc that a 27 year old female is constantly enticed by!?

Also, I have zero savings...do I pay off more of my available disposable income on my debts or start saving?

Any advice on this is greatly appreciated!!

Positve 2015 here we come!!

  • Positive start to 2015....so far so good but not a NSD unfortunately!!

    However...the good news is:

*Reduced Halifax overdraft to amount in the account and will continue to reduce it after each monthly payment...no temptation = no debt...£900 to go!!
    * Reduced Santander current account overdraft by £50 and will continue to reduce this each month to £200 (currently at £450...£200 only for emergencies!)
    * Paid £150 off credit card bill (currently £900)

Small steps but still spending money on frivolous things which needs to stop!! Any help on curbing the spending is greatly appreciated!!
