Sometimes though - especially in secondary school children get teased and bullied for being overweight and overweight children will often be unhealthy overweight adults.
Anyway I was reading something on a different site about how children's portion sizes have increased - it used to be (1950/60's) that a children's meal was half an adult portion (until they were adults) and served on a tea plate which is about 18cm and sweets / chocolate was a once a week treat, which considering school dinners probably come with a pudding isn't a bad thing, so might be worth as other posters have suggested only having fruit as a snack after school and save the treats for a weekend.Snootchie Bootchies!0 -
The easiest option is not to buy fattening munchie stuff - especially if DGD can reach all the cupboards.
..A packet of crisps every day? Good Lord, my kids thought themselves lucky to get their hands on one small packet a month! We made our own oat cookies - great activity to start a love of cooking - but I spent a [relative] fortune on fruit and nuts while they were young, though.0 -
For my daughter I do allow a packet of crisps a day - I don't want her to see any food as a treat and if she is not allowed them she would just buy them at school anyway.
I think all foods should be allowed in moderation and as she is 12 she can regulate what she eats now.0 -
The school should know who their named school nurse is. I suggested this as it would be someone who could pull together your specific concerns around eating and the difficulties your family has faced.
I always found them helpful & sensible souls, but service seems very patchy nowadays. I'm sure SENCo will be able to suggest someone.
Lots of good advice here, I hope it helps.0 -
I rarely have crisps in the house.
We have lots of Organic a Fruit delivered every week, or I buy.
I try to have yoghurts etc but must admit at the moment I have slipped.
She often gets sweets at school! I try not to buy them but sometimes do get pester power defeat!
I will try to do more healthy snacks.
She is prone to asking for instant noodles for her meal, if I'm eating stir fry or anything spiced.
We only have pop about one bottle a month.
It's the volume of food she will eat, and always expects a pudding!!
Sometimes it's an ice pop. But occasionally it's a chocolate cake or cheese cake.
I will speak to school Monday.
Thanks people. When I die I will know that I have lived, loved, mattered and made a difference, even if in a small way.0 -
Mooloo - I am not judging at all as my son eats for England if I don't reign him in. But he does a lot of movement. We cycle to and from school which is a 7 mile round trip and he does dance & sports classes to. Do you think your DGD gets enough exercise during the week? It could be that is what's needed more than cutting down on food. As I say I hope this doesn't sound judgemental. I think you sound like you do an incredible job by the way." Your vibe attracts your tribe":D

I too am impressed by your energy & commitment Mooloo.
There are lots of reasons that children over eat - and sometimes it's growth spurts and then a habit!
I don't know the exact reasons your DGD is in your care, but there have obviously been some difficulties. Sometimes kids who have lived in chaotic circumstances, when they can settle & feel safe, do begin to eat a lot - sometimes because they can, sometimes to see where & what the boundaries are.
However you handle this, you need support for yourself.0 -

It all started here!
I have been telling our story since DGD was tiny.
Last night she was caught with the Pringles, coleslaw, lemonade and fruit juice hidden under her pillow!!
She must have hidden it there when I was in the bath, trying to relief my itching!
Yesterday was busy in the afternoon, with teaching.
It was a bit off putting when two of the Mums stopped. Feel like charging them for my time and knowledge too!!!
Today has been all about housework and gardening.
This afternoon DGD has gone to Messy Church with another family. Gives me a chance to get on.
I've skyped my Mum, she's fine.
I popped in to work, to change the blade's on the overlocker, and brought my laptop and paper work back to work on.
So guess that's what I shall do now. When I die I will know that I have lived, loved, mattered and made a difference, even if in a small way.0 -
Spent the evening working on my wage bill etc.
Trying to do the PAYE etc
So panic sets in as I have now already got a bill of nearly £700 for tax and Ni, so I have over paid the staff as they are actually supposed to be taxed, and it seems that I have to also pay NI even for the lady who doesn't have to pay it her self!
This means I will really need to up the take or we won't be viable.
Growing too fast and not having enough cash flow would be awful.
So I will be analysing and juggling etc now more than ever. When I die I will know that I have lived, loved, mattered and made a difference, even if in a small way.0 -
When I worked for a company that was being bought over we weren't taxed one month and then paid extra tax in the next few months to make up for it, certainly the new company didn't take the hit and they were a massive organisation.0
