finding a mortgage broker

So how do you go about finding a good mortgage broker? Previously we've spoken to people who work inside the estate agents but this time I'd like to source someone myself. But I want to be sure I'm speaking to someone who knows their stuff- how can someone like me with very little knowledge on these things, be sure that the person I'm speaking to is knowledgeable rather than just someone with the gift of the gab? Word of mouth hasn't got me far so far...

Either ask for recommendations from people you know, or search on unbiased.co.uk (or .com , not sure which) after untucking the sponsored ads box. You want an independent one, who will look at the whole market.0

Have you looked at the Which advisory service?

They are balanced, and the fees seem pretty reasonable.
I will probably be going with them...
I hope it helps!0 -
If you are in a fairly straight forward situation then its not a difficult job as such - more just time consuming... We have sourcing software, so finding the rates isnt difficult at all. Its then cross referencing their criteria and affordability calculators with your personal information.
So pretty much any broker can do that - even if they do not know the answer its a case of checking with the lender.
Its more when you are not straight forward that experience comes in to play as lenders published criteria and what they accept are not always the same. Sometimes they can bend the rules or look outside the box. Other times its the opposite, you can fit the criteria but the underwriter just does not like the application as a whole.
Any broker that works on their own is likely to have a good few years experience. Most brokers start at banks or estate agents and then go their own way once they have the knowledge.I am a Mortgage AdviserYou should note that this site doesn't check my status as a mortgage adviser, so you need to take my word for it. There are a number of ways to find a mortgage broker, but choosing which one to use is more difficult.
If you don't know the market, or have not used a broker before, or for some time, you may not know what to look for or what to ask.
We have a guide to selecting a mortgage broker on our website.
Anyone who would like a link to this guide should PM me.I am a Mortgage Broker
