You don't need to go online to play games though, it's just an added perk.
The bbc report (on the telly news) made it sound like the consoles were unplayable.

    Exactly!

I do remember the disappointment on Xmas morning in the early 80s when my present, a Commodore 64, didn't switch on. Now that did feel devastating to me at the time! (turned out to be a blown fuse in the plug that my dad sorted).

I think there might be a requirement to go online once during the initial setup of the XBox One so if that was down I can see why there would be issues.

Indeed. I got a couple of PS4 games for christmas. Whilst you couldn't access their online features, they worked fine otherwise.

The only game that might not work at all without online connectivity is Destiny? I guess if you'd unpacked your new PS4 and Destiny was the only game you have, that would be annoying.
  • That quote from Ros Bruce had me laughing out loud. Family can afford £300 games console, can't play it for a few hours, demands compensation. (Although to be fair, I absolutely agree that paying subscribers must have a day added onto their subscription, and I wouldn't be surprised to see everybody who complains getting a free month.)

It reminded me of Karl Pilkington's anecdote where his parents got him a ZX81 for Christmas, but because it was missing an essential RAM pack he physically vomited. :rotfl:

I remember the days where I bought a game, had change from £25 and DLC was unheard of - or at the very least was limited to PC gamers and it was community made & free.
It's clear you've been out of the gaming industry for a while, as you don't appear to know about DLC, and you can still get change from £25 even from most pre-orders these days! Some of the pre-order pricing on games like Bioshock Infinite and Titanfall was ~£15! o_O

(Incidentally, that's nothing compared to my rant on the irony of the BBC's coverage, whereby they showed an Xbox 1 exclusive playing on a TV whilst holding a PS4 controller. But that would also be somewhat similar to "complaining about little things which are ultimately unimportant")
Was it plugged into one of these, perchance? :D (Or was the "irony" actually your rant?)
Q: What kind of discussions aren't allowed?
A: It goes without saying that this site's about MoneySaving.

Q: Why are some Board Guides sometimes unpleasant?
A: We very much hope this isn't the case. But if it is, please make sure you report this, as you would any other forum user's posts, to forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com.

Trouble is a lot of people dont buy hard copies of the games, On Xmas day the games could not be downloaded.
Some games cannot be played without going on line, Plants v zombies is one and im sure there are more.

    I love that anecdote! :D
    Dad: "Well, Tandy's is shut."
Karl: "...and I just went 'Oh God' and ran to the sink..."

That one, and his Christmas present for his girlfriend... :rotfl::D:rotfl:
  • Tandy's! Oh my, I spent so much time in there as a kid who liked to faff with breadboards and the like! Blast from the past :)

EDIT: I have just found http://www.tandyonline.co.uk/

My breadboard, and the wiring kit, came from Maplins...
  • We went to RS Components and occasionally Maplins after Tandy shut :)

I want to build things now...
