'Worst Christmas ever'

Just read this article on the BBC website about Xbox and Playstaion Live services being down.
Ros Bruce, from Essex, said her 10-year-old son got an Xbox One for Christmas, and he and a friend had spent weeks planning what games they would play together online.

She said they had been downloading a game since 09:00 GMT - and by 23:40 it was still not ready.

"He has spent most of the day in tears," she said.

"He says it's been his worst Christmas ever.

"I think Xbox should compensate us all."

I think that parent should have listened to exactly what GOOD video games retailers had been telling him/her for months. We would have been saying that if it was a Christmas present that the sensible & reasonable thing to do would be to set it up early & get the stuff downloaded early. Didn't take a genius to figure out something was going to happen, with all the DDoS attacks by script kiddies already happening it added to the already monumental risk of server crashes due to sheer numbers. I know I've been gone from the games retail sector a while, but it should be basic common sense & will also allow you to ensure the darn thing is working properly prior to Christmas Day.

Kids though if my experiences in games retail are anything to go by are disgusting creatures with a total lack of any sort of self regulation as to how the world works. So it takes a while for something to download, deal with it, instead I know there'll be a squad of them currently moaning at staff in games shops up and down the country cos their christmas was ruined. Nah how about those poor kids who didn't get a present yesterday, those ones who won't get anything as expensive as a new console - yet you don't hear them complaining.

(I think that second paragraph pretty much explains why I don't work in games retail any more - and explains that I really dislike children.)

I used to work in gaming retail, but that was many many years before all this cloud based stuff was around.. Can imagine it must be a nightmare now.

Kids now days, they never had to experience downloading on 56k modems!

It looks like they've edited the article removing most of those quotes.

I remember the days where I bought a game, had change from £25 and DLC was unheard of - or at the very least was limited to PC gamers and it was community made & free.

And I may indeed be a disgusting creature, but well, atleast I have the intelligence to understand that it's a dumb idea to place all ones eggs in one basket. If it's your kids primary Christmas present you get it sorted out well in advance of Christmas & don't get all mouthy when your grand gift is scuppered by things that were known WELL in advance. The groups involved had issued warnings they were doing this - it wasn't meant as an idle threat.

And there's me thinking it was a shop assistants job to help and advise people.
Lord protect us from superior techy bores.
It must have made your day when you could tell those disgusting creatures of customers " I could have told you so"

I have just come off a ten-hour shift at an emergency vets clinic with no break. Ten hours of trauma, grief and the occasional threat of violence, without food or rest apart from ten snatched minutes to get a drink of water and have a pee, consoling owners as they wept over their dead dog or cat - with only another lowly-paid ten-hour shift to look forward to in a few hours' time. :(

And you lot are sl*gging off and abusing strangers online over GAMES and game-store helpline unavailability. On Boxing Day. Seriously?!?

Is it really worth this petty squabbling match? Really???

If so; please accept my condolences, I'm sorry for you. But that's nothing to do with a game, a helpline or an internet forum.:cry::(

    Happy new year. x

The only solution for no vents to appears over the Xmas period then would be to close this part of the forum down for 48 hours!
