Laptop help please

Hi
My son has a Acer Aspire E14 windows 8.1 he has tried to play a DVD on it but doesn't know how to play through windows media player. The app is on the laptop but when the puts the DVD in it says play through power media player when he opened it, it said that it needed updating which he did this seems a lot of faf. When he tried again to play the dvd it keps saying update needed how does he play it through windows media player
