I need a PT job. Tesco don't want hard workers by the looks of it.

Feeling the need for a bit of a rant.
Recently started looking for a part time job to top up my student loan whilst doing a part time degree. So far I have been unsuccessful.
Christmas time so lots of jobs coming up so the perfect time to apply. I live really close by to a large Tesco so I applied on line and was lucky enough to get an interview. Had a surprise group interview which again I thought went quite well. I gave good answers to the questions and had a good rapport with the interviewer. Fast forward a week and a half later, I hadn't heard an outcome to the interview, even though they said it would be a few days before they notified the successful candidates. I'm not for one moment thinking that I was guaranteed the job but I was just curious to see how I faired. So I rang the interviewer and they said I was unsuccessful. I was disappointed as I need the money but who doesn't, life moves on.
Fast forward to today and I pop in for a few essentials for the big day and I see numerous folk (who are new as they have no uniform) just standing there and chatting and just looking like they don't want to be there. It makes me a bit cross as I would've grasped the opportunity to work there (even if the job was temporary). I like being busy and meeting new people. Hey ho rant over.....

I applied for a job, I REALLLLLLLY wanted, and when I mean really, I mean i'd of killed for it!
They needed 2 people, long story short, after going for an interview, they chose someone younger than me (possibly because they didn't have to pay them much)
That same month I got another job which I loved even more, and found out the original job was a total flop. The 2 people hired, 1 didn't turn up and the other quit after a week.0 -
Did you ask for feedback on why you weren't successful?
And how do you know that the numerous folk (who are new as they have no uniform) just standing there and chatting weren't actually just shoppers
Anyway, don't give up, it happens to us all. I'm sure you'll get something soon.

There can be a number of reasons why you were unsuccessful: past experience, competition for the roles, flexibility (I never mention by first degree, or the second one I'm studying DL) etc. I was even turned down for a supervisor role at my workplace because I didn't have a 'bubbly personality' (despite having previous experience in supervising/management and proven history of increasing profits.)0

Ask for feedback definitely.
I applied for a job with halifax as a financial advisor when I was about 20. I failed it, as it happened I failed 4 of the 6 parts. Looking back im not surprised I failed. I had nowhere near enough experience - im actually impressed I got an interview!
I asked for feedback which they gave me.
I had an interview for another job about 18 months later as an account manager at an insurance firm. The feedback I got from halifax was the reason I got the job. I know this because my manager said the job was 50/50 between me and someone else (although they were leaning more towards the other person) but something I did in the role play made me stand out.
If nothing else, calling up and asking for feedback means you can have a conversation with whoever did the assessments. If anymore jobs come up they will most likely remember you and you have a better idea of what they are looking for.I am a Mortgage AdviserYou should note that this site doesn't check my status as a mortgage adviser, so you need to take my word for it. As a Tesco Manager, here is my imput.
Depending on the job role you applied for, flexibility is usually the deciding factor between similar applicants. If the others had complete flexibility to work overtime when needed on top of their contracted hours, whereas you have a degree to work on, this may have been the reason.
Or, as i had recently, you aced the interview, they wanted to give you a job, but your phone number was written down incorrectly and they couldnt contact you.
Obviously i am just guessing, as could have been a number of reasons. If you know what department the manager who interviewed you works on, why not pop over whilst shopping next and speak to them?0 -
Feedback definitely is important as it will help you to fix things that didn't go well.
Also don't assume just because people are standing and chatting that they don't workWell could be they are waiting for someone to come and give them instructions or training etc.

One thing youllrealise as you the larger the company the more inclined they are to employ total numpties!!!0 -
Yeah and perhaps the OP was just to good to work there or had a lucky escape!. I've often wondered about the psychology and subjectiverty of a 'good' interview
Least the job wasn't re-advertised first, nothing worse then seeing a job come up again when waiting to hear, not quite in this supermarkets league, I had a brilliant, outstanding (my perception only!) proper all smiles interview and then received this blunty - only hours after seeing the job re-advertised.."we have reviewed your application and unfortunately you are not the right fit for the position at this time", what can you do with that! as would make me a little dumb for asking for feedback! I did however enjoy letting them know subtly as I'd seen the job come up I'd rather predicted being unsuccessful!!:)
They saw lots of candidates first time around! note to self! what do you mean I should have wished them luck with their 2nd attempt of interviews!only sanity is that I'm glad no further time was wasted and perhaps that they were quick-to the point so if you can turn it around like that, then all the better
What one company like, another may not! just like I'm not so sure why employers have to advertise jobs that may not exist, it can be detrimental to everyone0 -

Take a tip from someone who has delivered employment training for 10 years
I have pointed to the EXACT reason you were not given the job - and if you say you never mentioned this in interview i will say i do NOT believe you
Tesco (as other employers) are actually looking for COMMITTED staff they can INVEST time/resource/training in (even those working in the back offices)
They are not looking to fill a "stop-gap" in your busy career
In fact, a new employee will probably cost a company more then they can return to a company within the first 6 months = if you plan to work for a company for less than 6 months you need to bury that in prime BS
you need to take employers more seriously and they will take you more seriously
Akin - good advice - do NOT include "enjoy travelling" on your CV - because they will dismiss it and let you continue "travelling" - albeit it you got to the interview with it so i guess its all goodWhen will the "Edit" and "Quote" button get fixed on the mobile web interface?0
