planning for debt

New here so please stay with me if i get this wrong.
We have quite high outgoings each month which we currently manage.
However I am on long term sick leave and will go onto half pay in roughly 6weeks--at this point things are not so manageable.
I am considering asking our mortgage lender for a 2 mth payment break as this would allow us to mop up all our credit card debt in advance of half pay.
After this we would only have one loan which would have 14mths left to run and our other outgoings --which are still quite high but we would scrape through.
Has anyone any experince of this and what are your thoughts.
Our lender is the Abbey--do not know how approachable they would be.

Many thanks.
