Please feel free to sign the petition HERE aimed at making JSA & ESA claims payable from day 1 of the claim.
It is quite possibly a breach of the HRA to force claimants to wait 7 days before payments kick-in and can leave many people in dire financial straits.

People reaching pensionable age have to wait up to 7 days following their actual birthday before they receive the first payment.
Are you going to start a petition for them too?0 -
No - people should make sufficient provision to cover themselves for seven days (preferably longer).0

I disagree with the commenters, JSA is a very bureaucratic system and often people do need payment asap. I'll be signing.
The argument that people should just be better with money is very unsympathetic. JSA claims take weeks to process and the onus is on the claimant to do/provide a lot before they receive anything, and even then the benefit is so small. It's sometimes completely pointless because of the red tape and minimal payout. But yes, often claimants are in dire straits!0 -
If you think 7 days is bad just wait till Universal Credit kicks in , people will be waiting over a month for their first payment, by which time they'll be well into the hands of the money lenders.0

What makes you say that?
If you think it is forced, unpaid, labour - it isn't. The JSA benefit claimant is meant to be carrying out activities to get themselves a job. The state is not their employer, however much society has an interest in the person finding a job.0 -
Some people ma have lost jobs through no fault / choice of their own - redundancy, firms going under, etc
MSE is meant to be a helpful place- please do not judge others!breathe in, breathe out- You're alive! Everything else is a bonus, right? RIGHT??0 -
People don't get pay from the first day at a new job, people on benefits need it to be more like work as many get in financial issues when swapping from benefits to work. So, if you have just finished work, you would have received pay that should last you at least a week.
Plus, the number of people in short term money fixes fraudulently claiming would be huge and as we know, getting that money back is incredibly tough.
A week is a very, very short amount of time to wait and people should be grateful for that.0
