Calling in sick during probation period (Sainsburys)

I was made redundant at the start of December and luckily managed to be accepted into Sainsburys Supermarket as an online shopper. I work 4 hours a day, 5 days a week in the early mornings.

I've been at Sainsburys for just over 1 week and am very ill. I have a terrible cold, body aches/pains, coughing constantly and have no strength, however, I did manage to do my shift yesterday despite feeling like this (I don't know how I managed it, I felt awful!). Today I have called the sickline number to report that I am sick and need time off work. I am hoping I only need 1 days rest.

Since I am on a 12 week probation period, I am very worried that I will be dismissed at the end of my probation because of this absence. I cannot help that I am sick and would certainly go in if I felt better. It is not sensible for me to take time off because absences are unpaid but I cannot help it.

Is anyone familiar with Sainsburys and can give me some advice? As well as feeling really bad, I don't think it sets a good example to be handling fruit and veg while being ill considering how easy viruses can transmit.

  • Have you made up for those hours on overtime? That's probably what they'll look at.
  • I haven't done anything yet, I called the sick line a couple of hours ago. Nothing has been arranged, I just have to call when I am better or if I need an additional day off.

I would hope that the fact the you did make the effort to go in on the first day you were ill will count in your favour. Those working with you will have seen the condition you were in and presumably your supervisor was also aware.

As I remember my probation period with Sainsburys, depot not store, it was sickness over a year not the 12 weeks as such and adherence to policy rather than non-attendance.

So this was not turning up without using the correct procedure, phoning the sickness absence line is correct procedure.

Fail to turn up without good reason will get you not continued.

Have you had a contract yet what does it say about probationary period and absence?

When you return you will get a return to work and at this time you can ask them about your probationary period.
I started with nothing and I am proud to say I still have most of it left.

I think you'll be okay, most employers realise it's just one of those things and like the poster above has said, your colleagues will have seen that you weren't well yesterday.

Concentrate on getting better and then you've the rest of your probation period to be in tip top shape. Try not to worry!

Although you are in your probationary period you are still entitled to Statutory Sick Pay as you are considered an employee from the first day you start work.

Of course the same rules about SSP apply.

    Apologies for going o/t ....

Is an online shopper somebody who takes the orders customers make on line and picks out the products ?

Is this done in a branch or in a central warehouse ?

As long as you keep them updated on your progress it could go in your favour, employers don't like it when they aren't kept informed.

When is your next shift ?

Op I work for them too, what is it you need advice on ?

Yes that's pretty much it, the op will be given x number of orders to go and pick up. It will be done in store as Sainsbury's dont have what's known as dark stores for online shopping only.

Currently done in store if you are in early enough you will see loads of them with special trolleys, green boxes and bricks (hand held scanners) buzzing around the store getting in the way!

Sainsburys are currently in the planning stages for a dark warehouse within the M25 corridor to deal with orders in London.
I started with nothing and I am proud to say I still have most of it left.
