I am at a cross roads in my career, having spent 99% of this in either retail (supermarkets or clothing stores) and more recently in support roles in schools. I am looking at possibly moving into admin/office based work but worry I lack the experience companies look for....
I am wondering what roles people are doing that gives them a rewarding feeling and the job title they are in now, started out??

I like unravelling tricky technical and legal issues and explaining the available options and consequences in a way that a non-technical person would understand. I am a tax adviser. It wasn't planned - I started off as an office junior in the tax department of an accountancy firm, having previously worked in a factory for several years.
Everywhere I've got in life, in my work and otherwise, has been the result of a thousand tiny steps, each of which has represented a slight improvement from the current position. Every setback due to external factors just represents a new starting point for the next tiny step. Although with the way the world of tax planning is moving, it may the case that my ecological niche will soon become an evolutionary dead end.0 -
Director of my own company. You can't beat working for yourself (well most of the time anyway!). It certainly beats my previous role of Unix Administrator for one of the big banks.0

I was a receptionist for many years and loved talking to people from all over the world, the job evolved many times and up till a few years ago I did accounts too.
I loved every minute of my jobmake the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -

You need to be very careful with job titles and the way they are displayed. I worked in a garden centre many years ago and they decided everybody had to wear a name badge with their name & job title. As some of the job titles were quite long it was decided to abbreviate them to the first three letters of each word.
The General Manager and Deputy Manager were happy enough but the Assistant Manager refused to wear his badge. An absolutely true story :-)0 -
Iwork for myself now and love my job/work-life balance.
However, prior to this the best job I had was an account manager for an insurance company. It just involved speaking to the same people, building up a relationship with them etc. Monday and Friday was mostly taken up talking about football.
Tues-thurs was more focused on business but it didnt really feel like a job in the main.I am a Mortgage AdviserYou should note that this site doesn't check my status as a mortgage adviser, so you need to take my word for it. This signature is here as I follow MSE's Mortgage Adviser Code of Conduct. Any posts on here are for information and discussion purposes only and shouldn't be seen as financial advice.0 -
My favourite job title was the lowest paid, Underwater Ceramic Technician which translated to pot washer at a trendy bar.
My worst title had to be Project Manager, which usually means admin dogsbody.0 -

I've worked in an 'Innovation team', basically playing with new tech and new ways of working to pilot if it would save the company money rolled out. Lots of toys to play with, non-corporate environment, ever changing work, and like Snakey - talking to people all over the business training/ explaining how things work/could work and helping them out where I could.
I've now moved over to the events team with the same company - working with parts of the business to plan and set up events. Running the tech, and talking to the delegates if they have trouble on the day.
Again, hard work, long hours (12 hour days a norm), but plenty of downtime to catch-up on office stuff and I get to meet a range of people/ am never bored. That sounds like a classic case of premature extrapolation.
