No airing cupboard

I have just moved into my forever home and I love it. Its a Victorian 3 bed terrace, and for the first time in my life i dont have an airing cupboard!
The hotwater tank is situated in a built in cupboard but there is no hanging room or shelves in it like I have had in my other houses.

So 6 weeks since moving in, there is bedding and towels everywhere and I can't seem to find a satisfactory solution:o

Bed room 1 - a wooden bedstead with under bed storage in plastic containers(out of season shoes and clothes), a double wardrobe each(we bought off vendor) and a tall chest of drawers - all full of clothes.
Bedroom 2 - our 2 old wardrobes each in an alcove and a double bedstead(this is guest bedroom)
bedroom 3 - geek room with Pcs, desks, bookshelf etc
landing - under the attic stairs is a cubby hole that could take a tall narrow piece of furniture (20" wide by about 6foot tall gap)

Currently i thought one of our old wardrobes would suffice but typically airing cupboards have shelves not hanging space so all i could do was make a large pile of stuff at the bottom of the wardrobe, not working out! I got one of those hanging canvas shelves - kind of solves 30% of the problem but doesnt hold enough and is really heavy so am worried about snapping the pole!
This is a pathetically long post for a 1st world issue but I cannot get my head around what i need to get to replace my beloved airing cupboard.
Help!

I know what you mean, I would also miss not having an airing cupboard.

Can't you take out the hanging rail(s) in one of your wardrobes and fix shelves in it instead? And then you can put your towels etc on the shelves.

I don't have an airing cupboard. When we moved here we could not get my wardrobe up the stairs.

It is right here in my office. I have got used to it now looks OK, just a storage cupboard.

It is actually quite a short wardrobe with two huge draws at the bottom.
I have all the sheet, duvet covers etc in one draw and all the towels in the other. I have used the cupboard part for coats giving us more space in our wardrobes.

I bought an self assembly wardrobe for my room. Only a cheap one so if we cannot get it down the stairs we will leave it behind when we leave.

    No airing cupboard here!
Everyone has their own spare sheets in their own bedroom.
    Under bed drawers or cupboard.
Towels are the same. Family have their own and extra ones are in a storage unit with x6 box shapes. My DD says the rolled up towels are just like a hotel :0)
Kitchen towels and tea towels are kept in the kitchen cupboard.
The secret to success is making very small, yet constant changes.:)
  • Bearing in mind its a Victorian house and, presumably, terrace with it......(I'm thinking potential damp???)

Then maybe you could replace those two wardrobes in alcoves with built-in furniture in those alcoves. The bottom section of this being wardrobe and the top section being cupboard space above the wardrobe (as in for airing cupboard type things to be stored in).
  • I'm in a modern terrace house with a combi boiler in the kitchen, but the built in cupboard on the landing has a tiny wall mounted heater wired in to create an airing cupboard.

As moneyistooshorttomention said, I'd worry about damp so see if I could fit a mini heater into a cupboard especially in an alcove. I remember when my parents moved into a Victorian house with open fires, the built in cupboards were ok, but as soon as mum & dad changed the fires to gas fires, as there want the heat going up the chimneys, the cupboards got damp.
  • We keep bedding/towels in our wardrobe (duvet covers folded inside pillow cases and towels rolled up to save space). We live in an old terrace too so no airing cupboard for us either!

Do you have space at the bottom of a bed for an ottoman ? You could fit quite a lot of bedding in there

Thanks for the suggestions. We were unwilling to get rid of the wardrobes as they are newish and were quite expensive, so I'd rather re-use them. We don't have room for an ottoman sadly.

I think I may put shelves in the wardrobe - seems the best idea.
    thanks

  • Can you put some shelves up in the alcove?

Or one of those long tall shelving units like Ikea's Expedit or Homebase's Phoenix. You can get doors or storage boxes to fit them so visitors can't judge your mismatched towels :)
  • This is a bugbear of mine too. The last and this home has no airing cupboard and I hate it. I have all towels, sheets, non used clothes stored in plastic storage containers.

I air my clothes, after I have ironed them, against the radiators that are on now that the weather has turned cold.

If I am ever in a position to move into another property with one in I will actively seek it out and put a wall mounted heater in if it does not now contain a boiler. How sad am I :o

Oh for the days when everything was neatly stacked airing merrily and I used the underneath slats to hang coat hanger on to dry things overnight.

    Combi Boilers =
