Cheque in joint names

Options
Two well meaning relatives have sent us cheques for the kids for Christmas made out to Mr and Mrs... But being on a DMP I no longer have a joint account with my wife. I dont think there are any options here beyond using a cheque cashing place but id almost rather not cash them than go there. Could the cheques be used against our mortgage, just a thought? (Wed then pay the kids cash ourselves so they dont miss out).
I'm a greenfield sight for sore eyes, and sore eyes are just needing the light, the shapes, and the shadows of the space we share, before it splits into Thin Air.

  • I dont think banks are that fussed to be honest.

I've paid a cheque into my bank that was payable to someone else a few years ago. Was for £195. the person who wrote the chq put the wrong name on. It got processed normally and cleared, which was a worry.

By wrong name, I mean wrong name completely.
  • It can still be paid into a sole account

I don't think banks scrutinise cheques at all these days. I forgot to sign one, the recipient didn't notice, but it still went through OK.
I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.
  • I think a lot depends on the bank and the particular cashier too. I know Santander refused to let us pay a cheque in joint names into my husbands sole account.

Lloyds however have never really shown the slightest interest in who the cheque is paid to.
Can I ever learn this budgeting lark? So far it's not looking promising

I work in a bank and if I was presented with a cheque in joint names I would have to tell you to return it to the issuer to rename and initial the change or to pay it into a joint account.

Other posters have said that banks don't care now and other cheques have been cashed and paid this is due to the cashier not noticing or being paid in via a depodit machine and again the cashier not picking up the joint name and single name account.

It can be used against you mortgage Aslong as you are both named on the mortgage you will just need to put your mortgage account number on the back of the cheque.

    Hope this helps.
