extremely optimistic car mpg figures. what are my rights?

Hello for the past 6 months I have been driving a Toyota Yaris hybrid. Advertised at 85mpg. When I got it I contacted the leasing company as it wasn't getting anywhere near the mpg it should have been. They said to let the engine wear in. So 6 months later and im still only getting 39-50 mpg. I've had the car in to the garage on 3 occasions and every time they have said there is nothing wrong with it. They have taken me out for a drive and watched me drive and im driving it correctly.

I don't really know what else to do or where I stand as I got it thinking I could pay more per month for it and I would save on fuel but this simply isn't the case. Any advise would be mostly appreciated

was the 85mpg a combined figure for motorway and town driving?
What kind of driving do you do, and what speed do you drive at?
The advertised mpg figure is based on driving the most economical possible.
My car was advertised about 80mpg I think, I manage around 70 but most of that is motor way and I drive pretty steady.

cant remember off the top of my head but it said it would cost 8p a mile and up 85mpg. I drive around town. in between 10-30 mpg. Garage said they would have though id get really high mpg doing that as it should be on the electric for most of the time.

A car manufacturer giving false M P G figuresl. WOW!
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.
  • Won't have any rights as it will say in the very small print that the figures are not based on real world driving and were done in a lab.

Will get more replies over on motoring board.

If you want to see what other people get there is a site here: http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/realmpg/toyota/yaris-and-yaris-hybrid-2011

Looks like other people find it fairly optimistic too.

It's just I can understand a difference of 10 mpg or so, but at times I'm not even getting half what's stated. It's seems a tad excessive

  • My car was sold to me with a supposed figure of 45mpg on motorway and 30mpg urban...I get 18mpg in town and 23 on a motorway. Mine is used though. I can't do anything until it's paid off and then I plan to get rid of it and buy an old cheap car on the basis that the mpg will be around the same anyway.

  • They say up to, not average, and if all your driving is around town then 50mpg is pretty good i'd say. Though I don't know much about hybrids.

How are these "modern " fuel efficient egg boxes getting such poor figures.
