Credit file is unavailable - loan soft search error

Ladies and Gents,

I'm trying to get a loan to buy a narrowboat to live on as I've been throwing money away on rent for years and years.

I'v found a lovely boat and niavely figured that getting a loan for it wouldn't be an issue.
The boat is £35k and I'm borrowing £10k off my lovely family leaving me needing to borrow £25k which turns out is the max personal loan you can get.
Now I went to my bank Natwest and had a quick appointment with an adviser who said I wouldn't be lendable due to my 9 out of 10 rating. A little concerned, I left and did an experian check which put me at 850 rating, in the middle, all is not lost I thought. I have since applied for my electoral roll address to be changed.
At this point I thought I should just apply for a loan and see how I fair as the electoral roll change and credit people update will take too long for my desired loan in bank time frame.

And so:

I've tried to do a soft search for possible loans available but using Martins beta tool and totallymoney I get the error:
"Credit file is unavailable"
Does anyone know why this could be?

Cheers very much for any help or advice

  • How much do you earn?

If your salary is not upwards of £50k then you won't get a personal unsecured loan of £25k.

Have you looked into getting a marine mortgage?
    Thinking critically since 1996....
  • A specific boat loan is the next step yes, but I wanted to do a "soft search" first to see where I'm at.

Any ideas why I'm getting the error? I have cross checked the information stored in experia with the info I input into the search system and it is correct...

    Cheers
  • Try and get your statutory credit reports with Experian, Equifax and CallCredit (You can get this last one for free via Noddle).

Not being on the electoral roll will automatically have you being declined for a £25k personal loan.

You'll need a salary of £50k+, and a fantastic credit history to get that sorta loan.
Credit 'Score' - Don't buy the credit 'score' that Experian, Equifax and Noddle want to sell you. It's an arbitrary number that means nothing when it comes to applying for credit.

ALWAYS HAVE A DIRECT DEBIT SET UP FOR THE MINIMUM PAYMENT ON YOUR CREDIT CARDS, REGARDLESS OF WHETHER YOU PLAN TO LOGIN AND PAY EACH MONTH.
  • OK, thanks for the reply.

Any idea why my credit file isn' accessable by the soft search tools?
  • Non-standard address format?

House name. Flat. Inaccurate post town.
  • I checked that- both sites just request the house number and postcode. I have triple checked I am enering them correctly. Odd one this.
  • The search for a money transfer CC does work though... So in theory it's nothing on the Credit poeples end if that one works

The soft search on gocompare does work, still don't know why the MSE one doesn't, I have Experian and Equifax and the address is correct.

Anyhow, gocompare popped up that I have about a 60% chance of getting a £20k loan with Sainsburys, so I'm going to apply to them later today.

    Good luck with it.
  • Off topic now, but figured this info could be useful to someone.

I got denied the Sainsbury's Bank loan, I assume due to my Electoral Role address being incorrect, I wasn't vey hopeful but figured it was worth a shot.
So waiting until mid Jan when I will apply again
