Touch Lamp

I have found a lamp that I really like in a well known department store. It cost £40, more than I can afford right now.
I used search engines to try and find something similar then found the lamp I want at much less than half the shop's asking price, on an auction site. The original shop and price are mentioned on the listing.
I have come across this sort of thing before, e.g. curtains, bedding etc. and often wondered how the sellers get hold of current stock. I haven't bought such items from an auction site before as I worry about their source. I also worry, in the case of an electrical item like a lamp, that the item would not be safe.
Am I just being too cautious?

Being cautious where electrical goods are concerned is never a bad thing. Maybe you are being 'too' cautious, but ask yourself this: if you buy from the auction site, will you ever relax and enjoy your purchase, or will you just go on worrying? If the latter, wait until after Christmas and you should be able to pick up a touch sensitive light in the sales for around £20. Indeed John Lewis has one for that price now: http://www.johnlewis.com/home-garden/lighting/touch-activated-lighting/c7000013005?showAll=&sortOption=priceLow0

Thank you so much for your answer, it makes a lot of sense. This is the one that I have my eye on http://www.johnlewis.com/john-lewis-penny-touch-lamp/p212145 so I will look to see it it comes up in the sale after Christmas. Also, I am due some "reward" vouchers on my Partnership card which I usually use in Waitrose but, perhaps just this once, I will treat myself.
Thanks again.0 -
Be aware that if you have pets, they might figure out their nose can control a touch lamp!
I bought one and my dog quickly realised he could switch it on with his nose, and thought it was great fun!0 -

LOL, I can just imagine that, so funny. We don't have any pets these days but my grandchildren, given half a chance, would turn them on and off all day long.
One of the reasons I like the one I am after is that it doesn't take up much room on the bedside table but is quite heavy so shouldn't topple or move around easily.
I will get one, or two, eventually!0
