    Serves him right.

He is a thief and cannot be trusted.
A man walked into a car showroom.
He said to the salesman, “My wife would like to talk to you about the Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
Salesman said, “We haven't got a Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
The man replied, “You have now mate".
  • Mr Burrows, who is now banned for life from working in any regulated financial industries, has since paid back the £42,550, plus £450 in legal costs.
    ...
However he added that "the size of the settlement [with Southeastern] could be said to have led to a distorted perception of the scale of my wrongdoing".

Hmmm, let's see now, the fare was £21.50 but by not buying a ticket he got away with just paying £7.20 on his Oyster card. Underpaid by £14.30 each time. That's about 3,000 journeys, give or take. No, don't think anyone has a distorted perception of the scale of your wrongdoing, unless you're looking in the mirror.

Still got off with no criminal record.

Does this mean that the merchants who caused the crash are now going to get banned? No, thought not.
Whatever you do, do it safely.

    He's not a thief.

He took advantage of a loophole that let him travel into London for a fraction of the price that he should be charged.

He has been made a scapegoat to deter other fare evaders. I imagine many people have done similar things to dodge fares.

He should have had a valid ticket but if nobody ever checked him it's the train companies fault for a poor ticket checking system.

I feel a bit sorry for him.

Still I assume he's rich anyway!

Bankers are crooks in suits. A hedge fund manager is just another blood sucker who contributes what ? >
Southeastern said it believed he had been dodging the fare for five years as his last annual season ticket from Stonegate expired in 2008

That's like arguing shoplifting is OK because the staff failed to stop the shoplifting

If you leave your wallet or handbag in a bar by mistake, I assume that you will have no objection to me taking it, pinching all the money and running up debts on your credit cards.

After all, it will be your fault for not checking you took it with you.

No. He did not use a "loophole".

I don't know if you're confused about the terminology, or confused about what he did, but either way, it's not even remotely a "loophole".

There are indeed many people on forums asking for advice on settling out of court, so, err... yes.

You might want to familiarise yourself with the Regulation of Railways Act (Section 5)
  • No sympathy but on the other hand it is monstrous that he should be 'banned for life to work in the financial services industry'. Its one thing punishment and quite another to take away a fellow's livelihood!! How dare they do this! I hope it gets overturned after his appeal.
  • TFL prices are criminal.
