It goes without saying that if something is past its USE BY date, you should always throw it away.
That's a long post for a Newie, people don't read on the Internet the way they do on paper. On the Internet short posts are more effective with just a link in them.
But the bit you've highlighted, i don't agree with that. Perhaps a maybe.
I think it's a good post for a newbie and an interesting read, there are plenty of long posts on MSE newbies and older members alikeStay at home Mum to DS Oct 2011 and DD Dec 2013

I disagree SS - doesn't matter whether the op is a newie or not....an interesting post is an interesting post and I read exactly the same way on the internet as I do on paper!
In the same vein as other posters - I use my senses to make a decision on whether food is okay or not.....I have used dried, jarred and tinned stuff several years out of date....with fresh foods (meat and dairy) I will eat it if I think it is okay following the nose test
Although dates are useful for telling you when the quality or taste of something may start to slide, it's a guide - not a prescription. I have a friend who won't use anything which has passed it's sell by or use by date....she knows I don't care and happily eats at mine without question what she would have thrown away at home.... she is a marketing man's dream!!Mortgage 12.12.12 £55842 12.12.13 £42716 14.12.14 £28837 13.12.15 £25913
