My mum taught me to knit when I was younger but I never got on with it. I'm much better a crochet but am by no means an expert. I taught myself via Youtube and lusting over all the beautiful things in Attic24, in fact it was probably Lucy I learned the most from because her instructions are really clear with nice close-up photos. Once you have the basics down you can try one or two of her simple tutorials like the birdies or jar jackets.

I'm currently in the middle of a huge granny stripe blanket, inspired by hers.

I learned to crochet in my early teens. My friends' Mother was a prolific crocheter and passed it on to her daughter and me.

I crocheted my Mom a large square in my favourite colours at the time (purple and yellow) which she used up until she went into the retirement home 12 months ago.

I have since picked up a crocheting hook several times over the last year or two but couldn't remember how to do the corners and just as I thought I'd figured it out I realized I hadn't got the patience.:(

  • I used to volunteer at a community resource centre which ran a knitting circle and one of the ladies there taught me. YouTube videos are also a valuable tool.

I learned to crochet from scratch with youtube and made clever use of the pause, rewind functions.

It too me a long while to grasp the first stitches into the chain. I remember the frustrations! I still don't like that first line even though I am proficient at crocheting now.

Maybe look at crochet granny squares. I seem to remember it was the granny that set the seed of addiction for me.

My mum taught me to knit when my older sister was pregnant with my first niece in 1976, and I made her some mittens, booties and a bonnet, then the following year when my sister-in-law was having my second niece, I made her a cardigan and gradually learned to knit more after that, including a jumper and cardigan for myself (which is huge on me now, and I intend to unpick it and re-knit in a smaller size), and stuff for my DS when he was a baby and young child.

I taught myself to crochet in about 1979, using the instructions on the back of a knitting pattern book that my mum had, starting with baby clothes and then progressing to make myself a shawl (which I still have and will wear when I'm old and sat in my rocking chair, lol!). I also made a baby shawl for my son, and made a couple more for my eldest niece when she had her first 2 children.

I've also got a patchwork blanket that I've been making on and off for years, which is made with oddments of wool left over from other things and is multi-coloured, it will be finished one day, lol!
