Probably a touch of luck and a lot of hard work. What he trained for at college was nothing to do with IT and what he does now.
What do they say ...... the right place at the right time.Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,
What it may grow to in time, I know not what.

A friend of mine is an financial auditor. Trained as an accountant, worked for several of the large banks / building societies, about 5 years ago started his own consultancy business, now earns about 150K a year. There was no magic panacea, no inheritance, just years of hard graft. After he finished his degree he went on to do all the Chartered Accountant qualifications whilst working at the banks, I don't think he got fully qualified until he was in his 30's. So a lot of hard work, but it paid off.
I don't begrudge anyone a penny if they've achieved it through their own hard work and doing an honest day's graft, whatever business they're in.0
