A deferred defined benefits pension? Better left in place?
Have you read the scheme booklet about what happens to deferred pensions and when it may be taken without reduction?

It won't be difficult to find out at a minimum what type of pension scheme it is. You owe it to yourself to at least try. Phone up the railway pension trustees and ask them for a copy of the Scheme rules booklet. You can always come back here and ask more questions.
The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....
