Attaching decs to rock hard plaster!!

Our grandchildren are coming on Christmas day, for the first time, and I need to make more effort than just a tree :rotfl:
So, today, I thought I would experiment, and tried to put some decs up in the hallway........and fell at the first hurdle as I couldn't get the drawing pins into either the wall or the ceiling!
Any suggestions please?
