Ankle fusion to foot

Options
As anybody had there ankle/ foot fused together?, if so I would like to hear your experience about it & how it's altered your life , if any way at all.

I have been advised that my foot is in a bad way & that is the only option in my case , if I want rid of the pain.

Has it worked for you?.

Love to hear from you .

Thankyou

Had seven operations on ankle in space of three and a half years and was in wheelchair and crutches, unable to walk more than a few yards and in pain all the time but still working.

Had a tibio talar fusion and although my gait will never be normal and cant run, jump etc the pain is so much better. My consultant said my face looks completely different as no longer in chronic pain. Still get some swelling and pain but nothing like before. Very long and difficult recovery, there is an excellent group on facebook who will give all the information you like on ankle fusion.

I bought a knee scooter for recovery as it allowed me to go back to work after 3 weeks . Most people are off work for a considerably longer time than that.
  • Hi,

After a flying accident in 1975 sustaining compound comminuted fractures of the Talus and calcanium in both ankles, I suffered many years of limited walking and arthritic pain. I originally had the right foot fused (triple arthrodesis) in 1975 and 2 toes fused in 1976.
Three years ago I had my left ankle fused using a nail (a rod that is inserted up thru the heel into the leg and screwed to ankle) and a year later the right ankle fused using screws. I no longer have any movement in both ankles or right foot. I can move my left foot. I have to admit both operations and recovery were painful for about a year.
I can walk normally, although not too far, I cannot run or jump. The pain in the ankles has gone and I consider it the best thing I ever did. It has enabled me to live a virtual normal life without thinking every day about the pain in my ankles. I am 61 by the way
