Reliable plug in Christmas decorations?

I really love the moving/singing santa's and light up village scenes etc that are easily available right now. Problem is, I seem no have no luck with them at all. Every one I've had has only worked for one christmas and either won't work at all after unpacking it the next year or quits sometime during christmas. They are expensive too.
My mum has a lovely LED village scene that she's had for about 15 years, despite not being as careful as I am about packaging and storing them after christmas. Other people I know have had these things for even longer! Is there a certain brand/type that is likely to last?
