    Yes - keep ploughing!

I don't think it's the end of the world (at least not immediately) if the dates aren't exact or even if the payments have been split, but it is absolutely essential that the gross amounts are correct, and that the total net pay reflects the amount you have actually been paid - this is your priority.

I believe the date that 'should' appear would be the last day you are being paid for in the payroll period. I don't believe payment method or even sealed payslips are a legal requirement, but obviously confidentiality is an issue so they shouldn't be left lying around for anyone to find (ours are emailed to us, so no seal as such). Again, this is probably something to tackle later when you get the 'important' stuff rectified.

Do the payslips seem to have been generated from payroll software or is it likely that they have just cobbled something together in a word document? Does it include your NI number, as well as year to date figures for gross pay, tax etc and your tax code?

It's all just far too bizarre isn't it!

Hi SeduLOUs, yes it really is bizarre! Thank you for your help though! In answer to your questions...

The payslips are on slips of paper with corrugated tears along the bottom, the printed figures etc. are slightly offset so the come outside of the boxes as if it was printed on top of a pre-made slip... I did google 'fake payslips' and there is an exact template on a website offering fake documentation.... however the same template is also on Sage office stationary website, so can't be sure if its the real thing or not!

They do show my NI number correctly and the year to date figures... however these are obviously incorrect too as they reflect the wrong amounts of gross and net pay which I have been receiving.

You just have to keep ploughing at the primary issues then:

    1) Gross pay needs to be correct as per your contract and reflected on payslips
    2) Net pay needs to be calculated after tax and NI deductions (and you can use a PAYE calculator to get an idea of what these figures 'should' roughly be)
    3) Net pay on payslips needs to match the amount of money you have physically been paid
    4) Tax and NI deductions need to be reported to and paid across to HMRC. We are in real time reporting rules now, so if the payslips are genuine and the reports have been filed, HMRC should already know about them and you should check with them if anything has been sent over.

The other bits about payslip confidentiality/payroll datesetc probably do need sorting eventually, but aren't as vital. Ignore them for now otherwise you may give them an excuse to deal with the small unimportant things and leave the biggies alone!

Great advice SeduLOUs! Just been on hold by HMRC for an hour before my phone died :/ But that is my next step, to contact them and find out what has been paid (If anything!)

Is what you have been paid relatively up to date now? If so get out of there...!
