Working from home

Hi there,

Just wondering if anyone here can give me some advice.

I have been making personal gifts and signs for a while and would like to start selling on Ebay from home. I have already started to get a good reputation and would like to start selling and making money. I have registered as self employed and am more than able to fill in tax returns etc... My question is has anyone got any experience with regards to informing council and associated costs from running a business from home. Can anyone give me some rough figures. I would like to do all of this by the book.

Kind Regards,

Dan

  • Perhaps if you're planning to run a brick and mortar store then better do it by the book. IMO, you don't need any permits when running an online business solely but that'd still depend on your state/location laws.

    You don't "inform" the council.

If you are setting aside a room or outbuilding solely for making these gifts, you seek planning permission for change of use of part of the property. As you don't specify exactly what you will be doing - carpentry, metalwork, sewing, knitting? it is difficult to judge whether the activity could be carried out without the need for a C of U.

You should also check if there is a restrictive covenant on your home preventing its use as a place of business. Obviously if you are renting you should seek your landlord's permission as you may be contravening terms and conditions of your tenancy.
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales
