Laundry Starch

Call me old-fashioned, but I like my napkins to be crisply starched, particularly for "posh" occasions.

The trouble is, it's such a faff. I wash the little blighters, then have to ponce around measuring out starch and boiling water and then cooling it down with cold, and unless you use the whole packet you have an inch of starchy water which you're desperately trying to squish all your napkins into, then they've got to dry and you can end up with them like cardboard if you get it wrong.

Spray starch, on the other hand, has so much silicon in it that all it does is make my carpet slippery where the spray drifts to the floor - and my napkins are still all limp (ooh-er missus)...

I know you can buy liquid starch which you put into the drawer of the washing machine - the trouble is, it's hugely pricy.

Does anyone have any experience of using bog-standard Robin starch (or Boots' own, I've got both), mixed up and stuck in the washing machine? Does it work? I'd like to try it, but not if it's going to gum up the works... Or have you got any other brilliant ideas??

It is ages since I starched anything (ds2's cheffing whites) but I ironed them damp - they stood up on their own!

Could you pre-mix the starch and put it in a spray bottle. It would need to be shaken before use, but as I recall it does mix again.

DISCLAIMER I have not done this and my memory COULD be wrong

Reading about starch reminded me of a story an old lady once told me. She had gone into service when she was 14. When washday came round she did as her mother had taught her and starched all the white cotton washing including the lady of the house's embroidered cami-knickers. Never having had such garments herself she thought she done the right thing. Need less to say m'lady wasn't best pleased and my old friend left soon after. :rotfl:

Hey not really sure if this is the right board… but I if I head to the shopping boards I end up spending money!!

Anyways; I was just wondering if anyone knows where I can buy Starch as in the liquidy stuff that you bung in the washing machine drawer. I used to buy it in John Lewis but they now only sell the spray stuff which looks like too much effort for me.

I’m pretty desperate because unless slightly stiffened my uniform shirts go all floppy and look like I’ve slept in them before I even get to work.

Any help/suggestions would be greatly welcomed as I’ve wandered all round town this morning and nowhere does it… I got told that people don’t use starch anymore.

    Ta muchly in advance

I got my last tub online from Lakeland but I'm pretty sure I've seen some in Wilkinsons. Sainsburys do a spray type if you get desperate.

    Hi amy,

You can get laundry starch from Lakeland and Dri-Pak sell it too. You could call Dri-Pak's customer service on 0115 932 5165 to see if they supply it locally to you to save on postage.

Does anyone know where I can buy this? I've had a look on Tesco's website and they only appear to have spray starch - not sure if that will be any good for me (I need to stiffen up a nylon bag that went a bit floppy in the wash).

    Thanks.

Dylon used to make a liquid starch that you could use in the washing machine but I haven't seen it for ages. You should be able to buy starch powder from Boots and then you can mix it to the strength you need.

    Hi Geri,

There's an earlier thread that should help so I've added your post to it to keep all the replies together.

    Thank you.

Looks like a trip to Boots might be in order then!
