It is a bit annoying to have to have a credit card or paypal registered with them to get free downloads, but you can buy google play cards instead if you prefer not to have your cards on file.

Do they ever do offers on the gift cards, like they do on iTunes? Can't recall ever seeing any offers

Yes they do offer on Google Gift Cards. Usually in Tesco stores. Usually 10-15% Off. Guess there will be some in the new year
