Stop worrying so much about "best before" dates. Things never used to have these dates printed on packaging. How on earth did we manage for all those years?
When I was young eggs were bought at the grocer's shop and put in a paper bag for you. You had to be very careful not to break them on the way home.0 -

That happened to me - the egg passed the bowl of water test, so I thought everything was ok. Luckily I always crack the eggs into a cup first - the smell was awful and lingered for what seemed ages!0 -
I've read older eggs are better for baking than fresh. Dan Leopard gives the reason in one of his books but I can't be bothered to look right now

We keep chickens so don't do use by dates
