'New' customer on 'old' account...?

Having just cancelled two credit cards, I was wondering how long it needs to be closed before I am considered to be a 'new' customer to take advantage of new customer offers?

It depends on the company, With Capital one you can close an account and then open another straight away and get the new customer deals.0
