Argos sofa won't be delivered until 3 weeks after arranged date (and after xmas)

Hi!
I hope this is the right place to ask this. I ordered a sofa from Argos on the 9th of November and was told it would arrive on the 8th of December (within their 20 day delivery promise). Today I had a call saying it wouldn't be here until the 29th of Dec at the least, probably later. No explanation or compensation. I'm very angry, as this means no sofa in time for xmas (we just moved into a flat so we don't have an old sofa we can use). We've spent around £1000 in Argos over the last two months for furniture for our flat and I feel so angry that Argos can do this. I have read that "From 13 June 2014, if you order goods online, unless otherwise agreed, they must be delivered within 30 calendar days as covered by the Consumer Contracts Regulations." so I don't know if I have a good case to complain? I just want it here in time for the Christmas, even if it ends up getting here on the 24th. Without it, my brother won't be able to stay as there will be nowhere comfy for him to sit or sleep, so its a big problem for our xmas plans. Can anyone give me advice on what I might be able to do?
Thank you!

Buy a blow-up mattress and put it on the floor?
We did this for about 3 months in our new flat when we were waiting for our furniture.
So, that's your xmas problems dealt with.
In regard to Argos you should definitely complain - have you tried their customers services as a starting point? You may need to write to get a formal response from them.
I think you should be expected to be compensated (we've seen this happen a lot on this forum) for delayed deliveries.Thinking critically since 1996....0 -
They can't magic one out of thin air - if they say it will take XX days then thats what its going to take.
You are of course entitled to cancel your order and order from elsewhere.
Are you entitled to compensation, probably, but that would require you to discuss it with Argos.
There's nothing we can do to get you furniture any quicker through your rights.0 -
Had a similar problem with Argos at Christmas two years ago.
Ordered a 7 in 1 football table game. I stated in my conversation that I was only ordering with them as they told me the item was in stock and could guarantee I would receive it in time for Christmas.
Two days before delivery due, I get a text message changing the delivery date to January 15th. I sourced the exact same item from another supplier who had it in stock and could get it to me in time, but at £350 extra.
I phoned Argos and stated that as I had placed the order with the on the basis that the item was in stock and delivered before Christmas, I was within my rights to order elsewhere and insist Argos made up the difference.
I got the football table on the original delivery day.
Search out an identical sofa and tell Argos you expect them to pay if it is any more money.0 -
A blow up mattress would be okay, but until then we only have a bed to sit on, which is a bit inconvenient. I can't really ask my family round for christmas if we all have to sit on the bed/floor. I'm just frustrated that they can do this, I've seen some similar complaints online. I know they can't magically make one arrive, but it doesn't seem like their ordering system is any good. They take your money without even being sure they can deliver the item they sold you.0

Thank you! I will try that now. Having trouble finding a similar sofa at the moment, though. Argos never explicitly stated it would be here for christmas, just that it would be delivered within 20 working days from the 9th, so I don't know if they've broken an agreement, my boyfriend says that they haven't.0 -
Just an update, found the same sofa elsewhere. They said they can deliver on Friday if I order today. Same price, but an extra £40 delivery fee. Kind of worth it to stick it to Argos. Going to ask for a refund and order from the other company
Thanks for your advice

You could technically claim the additional £40 off Argos too, since they've breached the contract by not delivering within the stated timescale.0
