I have just qualified as a teacher and i am one of the lucky ones with a job to go to BUT i really need to move as my job is near to my home and i also have the nosiest neighbour who's child will be in my class and as i like to have a drink in the garden with friends (weather permitting) and have the occasional party i don't want the world and his dog knowing my business
Earning 20K a year is making it impossible to get onto the homeowning ladder. (I am on my own with a teenage daughter).
Has anyone any advice for me please?
Thanks

I am a teacher and know how you feel - I would rather live in a tent in a field than live in my catchment! If I venture into the area where I teach, the whole school hears about it the next day! So I will always ensure that I live at least 10 miles from the school that I teach in!
One of my work colleagues got a key worker loan to put down as a deposit on a house and providing that she stays in teaching, she doesn't have to pay it back! Then she could get a 100% mortgage as she had a nice deposit.
What area do you live in? What are property prices like? How about affordable housing/shared ownership? I would start doing some research about whats available contacting local developers/housing associations. Mortgage companies like teachers as our pay rises are guaranteed practically and jobs relatively secure.0 -
Sorry....forgot to say congratulations on the job by the way! I went into teaching later than the norm and really enjoy it, despite being in a sort of challenging school!
If you ever need to make an extra couple of grand a year have a go at exam marking for an exam board - I mark coursework and examine and usually make an extra few grand a year - rather nice as it arrives in lump sums and this year will be funding my house move! (I started doing this in my NQT year and have done it ever since)0 -
Thank you so much for your reply.I will look into it all.
I am late into teaching at the grand old age of 38, 7 years exp as an LSA though made me think why am i doing this for crap money?
I live in Somerset and house prices are crazy for here, you need about 150K for a 2 up, 2 down.
It is nice to find someone who understands me, my mum thinks i am worrying about nothing and should stay in my council house and pay the £250 a month...i only wish i could.
Exam marking sounds good, does it take up much time though? As an NQT about to teach year 6 i am scared about my time constraints as it is.:D0 -

I completely agree with you - I really feel for LSA's - our school treats them terribly. I would seriously look into shared ownership - I don't know whereabouts you are buy I put shared ownership into Google and it came up with this: http://www.ssh.co.uk/housing-HM_partBuyPartRent.asp
Exam marking at KS2 and KS3 must be pretty straightforward - it will be ticking yes or no answers. Have a look at www.examinerrecruitment.org - you can apply for anything like that there. I mark mainly at weekends twice a year so yes, it can be done and it looks great on your CV! Apply now for next years tests - and by the time they come round you should be sorted in terms of planning.0 -
Congrats on getting a job, but commiserations on living next door to a pupil.I do supply and try to avoid working in my catchment area.I have worked here but it makes it hard when i walk out with my dogs , as kids are shouting "miss miss dya live round ere".I am worried about them knowing exactly where i live, as colleagues have had bricks through windows, and this is a nice area n school:eek: "You can't stop the waves, but you can learn to surf"

Have a look at this site http://www.mortgagefinancial.co.uk/mortgagesforprofessionals.html
but I tend to agree with your Mum,why pile on extra commitment ,see how it goes, and just be firm and polite. To be happy you need to make someone happy.0 -
Perhaps a suggestion you won't like, but if you live in a council house, have you looked in to swapping it for one in another area? You could possibly do this relatively quickly, and can still buy if/when you want to.0
