What happens to returned IT gear

I have been offered a refund on a faulty tablet (13 months old) by PC world - but am concerned about leaving data on it - Although not accessible via normal methods, it obviously is still there (as happens on returned conventional HDD's - even after formatting !!!)

Before anyone says "did I not use password protection" - this would not help at all - passwords work in the tablet BIOS level - which is above the user level - so would not prevent "piggybacking" data recovery..
I am assuming that the faulty gear, gets shipped to the far east or India for salvage, but what is to stop the flash memory from being extracted and data recovered
To that end - I have requested that, after assessment - I am given the device back and this will allow me to restrict further access with a hammer - the bits will then be returned to PC world.....
Unless someone has an alternative suggestion ?

How do I remove data from an inaccessible drive ?
How much is DATA old ?
  • What make you think that anyone cares about what data you may have stored on it?

Unless you are an individual with access to data that would be considered so sensitive that absolutely nobody must see it, then nobody is going to give a toss and they certainly won't bother going to the extreme of running a recovery routine on it.
Understeer is when you hit a wall with the front of your car
Oversteer is when you hit a wall with the back of your car
Horsepower is how fast your car hits the wall
Torque is how far your car sends the wall across the field once you've hit it
  • since when did a tablet have a drive ? it has a chunk of memory worth less than nothing second hand, so not worth unsoldering

the chances are that they will be sold off to a company that repairs and resells them

as far as selling to a 3rd world country , hell the chineeze are already doing it , sending there crap to the UK

It'll get refurbished and sold to an Ebay seller.

Right - Would you not worry about your personal data if you sell a phone or PC ?
I have emails and passwords both personal and work) as well as browsing history on the device (banking etc) - none of which I want to be generally known

    You cannot remove data .
The NAND memory if it could be extracted in a working condition is worthless .

Tablets do have drives - just flash as opposed to HDD - In my case, its 16Gb in size !!

Its not the value of the hardware - it's the data that concerns me
If it is sold to a refurb company - will they securely wipe the data before selling it on ?

You may have to trust to luck, that the next owner is not in the slightest bit interested in any data...............http://www.cnet.com/uk/news/android-phone-wiping-fails-to-delete-personal-data/

  • Ask PC World how they secure un-removeable data on returned items.
