hair dye build up fix - progressive highlights?

Hi all
Advice again please. I am sadly going quite grey and am not ready to submit to it! So for a number of years I have been dyeing my hair brown which has gradually through build up turned dark brown and now appears almost black. This does not go well with an ageing face.
I am really wary about going to a hairdresser as I have had some appalling experiences and do not have one I trust so I am having a bash at correcting the situation at home.

So today I highlighted my hair- paint on- with a bleach based Jerome Russell kit. Overall I am pleased. I only left it on 10 min and hair is in good condition after, and I now have browny red highlight amidst the black.

So here is the question- can I keep doing this and gradually get my hair in OK condition and lighter (it is long). My goal is mid brown with caramel and red highlights

This means that every 3 weeks I would have to touch up the roots then apply a few more bleach streaks.

Not fantastic for my hair but probably no worse than the previous dye every 3 weeks or is it? will it all snap off?

Help please

Make sure you highlight when your hair isn't freshly washed. Maybe look into mixing a Wella colour and developer for yourself as they are much less harmful than standard boxed bleach kits. Both are available from ebay fairly cheaply, and you can buy a mixing pot set for £2 from savers.
Do a deep condition once a week, use a voilet shampoo to stop brassyness and use a Jerome Russell toner every so often.
Try not to progress the higlights too far down the hair shaft on already highlighted hair as you cause the hair to dry out and thats when breakage starts.
If you find that hair won't lighten past a certain point and remains too orange, then you may have lost the pigment from your colour blocked hair.
You might have to grit your teeth and have a fair bit cut off as already dyed hair thats long won't take too well to a harsh new colour, as that hair shaft past a certain length is old.

Not sure if this helps but I had chocolate low lights added to my heavily high lighted hair.. the colour was very dark.Bit too dark for me
I washed my hair in head and shoulders and left it in for 5 mins then used a really good conditioner, did this for the next 5 washes
It really lightened it up to a stage where I was happy..
Now I use a proper shampoo and conditioner..
  • If it happens again hopefully not. Boots sell a shampoo from a premium range (sorry I forgot the name) which helps fade too dark colour. When I coloured my hair I detested having to do a touch up application its a bit too fiddly for me:(. So I now use garnier belle color instead of nice n easy in a golden brown shade. The belle color can be applied to the whole head at once like a shampoo even if you already have coloured hair with it or another brand, I do it every 8 weeks and I never go too dark or get build up.:)
Britain is great but Manchester is greater
