    Thanks everyone for the ideas.

There's some lovely stuff on Sparklebox but unfortunately I do not have access to a colour printer, just a b/w laser. I suspect I may have to buy one before the start of the school year!

As a parent I can guage a lot about a teacher, students, ability, morale etc by taking one glance around a classroom. A lot of the positive stuff comes from seeing pupils work. Especially work that meshes rather than lots of individual efforts.

This is so true, but what you have to remember is that at the very start of the school year you have a period of at least several weeks where you do not have any work from the children to put up yet. Quality work takes time to produce and then there is also the mounting/preperation for display time. Bear in in mind that most classrooms have at least 5 large display boards and it then becomes more clear why a teacher (especially a new teacher) might need to put attractive posters etc up to make the classroom bright and engaging before any work has been produced.

Tony - I know you can't do it this year, but a nice display for future years is to get your class, at the end of the year, to produce pieces of work welcoming the new class to your year group and explaining the kind of things that they have to look forward to.
Most recent wins: IPad, Jamie Magazine yearbook, Links of London friendship bracelet, Baumatic ice cream machine! :j

i picked up a free poster in waitrose a few weeks ago. Its of seasonal foods . Title at the top is "Whats in season your month by month guide to uk produce" best of british. It then has 6 months worth of seasonal foods for instance August has a picture of a fish, goosberries , errrm romaine lettuce and cherries along with a list of other foods. Its a 6months guide poster it came folded into a4 but its 4x that size. If you dont' have a waitrose near you i bet if you emailed and asked they would send you one. Its very well done .

There are a couple of the larger book publishers which will send out free posters. Some are listed here, along with other teaching goodies:
