Uncertain what to do

I have lived in my house for nearly a year. Whilst I was out today a bailiff has called chasing the previous owner. His letter through the door indicated that he would call back at any hour of the day or night. I have a vague idea of where the previous owner now lives. Should I pass this on the the bailiff or deny all knowledge? Replies asap please as I need to phone to stop him coming round again.

Thanks

Call them and tell them when you moved in and when the previous owner moved out. Perhaps you could get hold of a utility bill or mortgage paperwork proving when you moved in.

dont get involved with anything else, itll get messy.

  • i had this in my previous house. it got worse and worse with letters and poeple turning up at the door at all hours asking where he was as he owed them money. If i had known where he was i would have gone round and kicked him in myself i was so angry about being threatened all the time - and basically accused of being his family and that we did know where he was.

But be careful cos the one i speak of was a bad sort and i imagine he would have been round at ours causing trouble if we had said where he was. If you can cope with this option then yes tell but please be careful.

    Hi Sahmx
Remember - bailiffs have NO right of entry to your home. They have to prove you are connected to the debtor rather than you proving otherwise. If they turn up you don't have to answer the door or speak to them. If they try it on, call the police (999) immediately and say there's about to be a breach of the peace. Let the police turn up and sort it.
Don't let them get to you - you have nothing to fear from these idiots.

Let us know how you get on and stay strong!

Thanks for the help and advice. I feel much better knowing what's right and wrong.

I've called the baliff back and told him when we moved in. I didn't say anything about the previous owner. Our kids are at the same school so it's too close for comfort.

Make sure that all previous owners' names are not still registered on the electoral roll as living at your address - when my son moved into his 1st house he had policemen call round to arrest the previous owner, whose name was still registered at that address - fortunately, DS could prove who he was but the policeman told him to delete the other people as soon as possible. I think DS just googled 'electoral register' or 'electoral roll' and went from there.
There should only be your name (plus your partner etc) listed. Also I have a feeling that if past occupiers had dodgy credit scores and are still listed as living at your address, then it can affect your own credit score.

I agree with the post above. Make sure the house hasnt been blacklisted as this will go against you on credit scores etc.

A friend of mine has her house blacklisted from the previous person living there. She still gets threatening letters that are for the previous owner.
