Solar >>> deemed export vs. actual export

Options
Would the installation of a smart meter move an electricity supplier's solar electricity customer from deemed export to actual export?

Would actual export metering place a customer in a less advantageous position?
I have osteoarthritis in my hands so I speak my messages into a microphone using Dragon. Some people make "typos" but I often make "speakos".

For someone like myself that has an iboost turning my immersion heater on when im going to export, it would definately not be a good thing!

It won't make a difference at the moment. I think the current 'requirements' of the smart meters doesn't include using export. The problem is that the role of smart meters hasn't yet been completely decided.

I think BG have about 1m smart meters out there that won't meet the current suggested parameters .... crazy or what!

As to benefit or not, well, for me I'd benefit, I export about 70% of gen, so miss out on being paid for 800 to 900kWh's, but it's all cool and balances out I suppose.

I believe on average, more is exported than 50% even taking the use of water heating diversionary switches into account, so I doubt there will be any rush to change things.

Mart. Cardiff. 8.72 kWp PV systems (2.12 SSW 4.6 ESE & 2.0 WNW). 20kWh battery storage. Two A2A units for cleaner heating. Two BEV's for cleaner driving.

For general PV advice please see the PV FAQ thread on the Green & Ethical Board.
  • The advantage / disadvantage would all depend on the size of the array(s). With a small array (2 - 3 kWp) you could use most of the generated power if you diverted it to water heating, but a larger array could well result in more than half being exported.

There have been a lot of scare stories around of how smart meters will switch your freezer off remotely or work out what TV channel your watching.

However, the ones being rolled out at the moment are remarkably dumb. The only features that the electricity suppliers actually care about are
    1. The ability to read the meter remotely, and
    2. The ability to shut off your supply remotely if you don't pay.
    So that's all they do.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

    Hi

They'd have a job collecting anything from here via GSM/GPRS, let alone disconnect supply ... can't really get a mobile signal anywhere downstairs and upstairs is little better - as for data, well you might be successful further up the hill in the village, but here - you might as well use semaphore or the post box ... :D

... there's always the option of piggybacking onto our Wifi, but I'd certainly ask for payment for providing the service ... ;)

If a meter (SMART or not) has the "capability" to meter export then it could potentially force your FIT provider to move you from deemed if they were to follow FIT guidance to the letter. This isn't absolute and not happening atm but it's up for discussion.

The majority of small FIT generators would be worse of on meter export.
