Restart pension after not paying in for years?

Hello,
I started a personal pension with Friends Provident way back in 1988, paid in for a few years (six maybe) then let it lapse. I still get a statement once a year and have about 25K in it. My question is, would it be possible to start paying into this again assuming I wanted to?
I know I could phone them and ask but I'm curious as to your views as to whether I'd be better to start afresh with a better pension? I'm not sure what I'm paying in management charges or if the Friends Life (as they're now known) pension is any good.
I'm 45 now and really want to start contributing a meaningful amount towards retirement. I also have a work pension but that only takes 1% of my wages which my employer matches. I'm making enquiries as to whether I can increase this.
I reckon I have about £300 a month to play with but looking to put some of that into passive investing via a S&S ISA maybe.
Any help gratefully received!
