Hi, does anyone have experience with their child going to uni whilst parents are on a DMP and whether this is taken into consideration with regards to loans, grants etc or whether they just take both parents annual salaries and work off that.
Obviously we have little money left to help with his living costs each month etc.
Many thanks,

I don't know the answer I am afraid, but as your post has disappeared off the front page without being answered, I am bumping it back up again. Hopefully someone will be able to advise0

Students don't get grants based on parental income anymore, as far as I know, but please correct me if that is wrong. If you can't help him, then he will need to either find a job to help support himself or consider deferring for a year to work to raise funds.
That's wrong. There is a non means tested element to loans but the means tested element is based on parental income, and that does not take debt into account.0 -

Hello,
There's a non means tested amount of about £3,600 pa and then that can be topped up dependent on the household income - actual not disposable.
My son went to uni this year. He's a procrastinator (and a half) so was last minute with everything and still hasn't received this terms amount. I don't think it's a huge problem if in halls and the universities are reasonably understanding but there's no private landlord in the world that will wait for rent!! (My son is renting cos he didn't get his act together for halls. It works out cheaper but he is fortunate to have the bank of mum to fall back on in the interim before he gets his loan)
Also, he has a Santander student account which has a huge overdraft available but, you have to deposit a certain amount ( I think £500) before you have access to the whole overdraft.
I would try and get ALL the forms done as early as possible.
I hope that helps.0 -
hi it does depend on your income rather than any commitments you may have. My brothers all went to uni when our step dad ( who never gave us a penny - not that we wanted it) earned quite a lot of money, and they all got the least amount of loan.
However, there are other student services too. Does he have any learnings difficulties? My brother found his Dyslexia support a lifeline.

Many thanks for all your replies. (This is what the last comment i made should have said!)
I am getting him to fill the forms in now and we will wait and see.0
