Preparing for Winter V

Ahah! If anybody would care to recommend a particular log-splitter, I'm all ears/eyes. I'm starting to get a bit long in the tooth now for workouts with the log maul every few weeks over the winter, and my dear wife's shoulders are no longer up for it either.

I’m no expert machinery-wise as that is Mister CJ’s department, but I think ours is the Clarke horizontal one from Machinemart and it’s great.8

The applewood should be deliciously aromatic and very glad you're replanting trees for the future to replace those chopped down.9

We have the Handy 3000w Vertical 7 ton logsplitter. It was expensive but we are hoping to get many years of use out of it and it cuts through the logs like butter, its not taken long at all this year and very easy to use. My DH filled a large builders bag in an afternoon. We had a horizontal one in the past but it broke going through a hardwood log and despite repair it didn't last much longer, it was good for smaller logs though so it depends on the size of the logs you get.
I should also say, they are quite heavy and bulky and ours also needs to be on a flat surface so you need to think about where you split your logs.8 -

If you are worried about the food in a freezer, during a power cut - could you dehydrate the food - including the meat?7

The place we bought our stove from definitely told us we wouldn’t be able to get a multifuel stove (our original choice) for much longer because they were being outlawed. Ordinary house coal is already unavailable (replaced by those briquette things), and if you live within one of the clean air zones you can’t burn green wood, it has to be kiln dried. But there was definitely something about new multifuel stoves being banned, as Primrose noted upthread.7

I want to get a couple more base layer tops, and dig out the wool for sofa blankets.6 -
No, woodbruners are not being banned. Companies can't sell you wood that isn't seasoned that's all. Certain types of coal will be banned though. I read this"Sales of all bagged traditional house coal will be phased out by February 2021, and the sale of loose coal direct to customers via approved coal merchants will end by February 2023." but can confrim my sister bought loose coal last month.
