I've been on the look out for 'Garden in the Hills' having had it to read from the library some years ago but sadly it has never been in the charity shops or at a boot fair, I'll keep on looking. . I loved her 'salad' recipe in Garden in the Hills where she says she wanders the garden and veg patches with a bowl and a pair of scissors........

    Try here:

I think it was probably from here that I inherited my habit of putting very young green blackcurrant bush leaves in some of my early season salads.
  • Just started my winter prepping here. Just had a load of logs and kindling delivered and managed to get a chimney sweep booked for 2 weeks time (He is fully booked for the next month!). Weather looks pleasant here for the weekend so I plan on putting away parasols and packing away outdoor cushions for next year.

We also have a car load of rubbish from the garage to go to the tip (old paddling pools, child's bike and some old cabinets etc).

I have been eyeing up a slow cooker, I used to have one but got rid of it when we moved house as I didn't have room for it in the new kitchen, but I now regret that decision!

  • Found conkers this week!

Should still be reasonable here for another fortnight or so but bordering on needing the heating on of an evening.

Sheets drying outside this morning as it's clear and bright. Told DH we'll put away the washing line and cover the swing seat etc the first full weekend in October.

We didn't have anything in the garden this time last year when we'd been here about three months lol. This summer it's been totally done, broken greenhouse gone, patio laid, full turf laid and veg patch planted!!

We collected 10 ikea bags full of logs from a freecycler this morning, they'll need to season but there's plenty of room in the garage.

Winter duvet has gone on the bed, despite it being a glorious day here in Kent, I've been waking up cold and my joints are suffering. I'm so looking forward to a bath and early night now!

The slow cookers been on a few times this week, I've been meal prepping on a Sunday, chopping all veg and popping in pots in the fridge and then just chuck it all in the slow cooker on the day with whatever meat is going with it. I used 4 sausages in a root veg and dumpling stew on Monday and it feed DH and I a large portion each and DD1 popped in so had a large bowl and took a portion home too. Filling, cheap and makes the house smell lovely.

Last of the foraged fruit is defrosting ready for the wine process. We've got 5 demijohns blopping away in the hall at the moment. Looking forward to those!

  • Pumpkins harvested from the allotment and washed, dried and now in store in the cool shed. Apples picked from the tree yesterday, sorted and waiting to be newspaper wrapped and stored in boxes also in the cool shed. Cider made a couple of months ago has stopped 'burbling' in the study and will also go up into the cool shed to settle before being bottled and aged before drinking. Tomatoes have finished in the greenhouse and been cut down and put into the compost heap. Winter leaf wash has been found for the redcurrants to hopefully get rid of the redcurrant aphids and we're waiting for the last few peppers to be ready in the greenhouse before sulphur bombing it to clear pests. Sweep comes on Tuesday morning, boiler has been serviced too so winter preps well under way!
  • starting to feel Autumnal in the evenings now - smallest one ( nearly 7) has been asking about when the clocks do the going backwards thing and next one up has noticed it's dark before bedtime!

Picked 1.5 kilos of sloes today - can’t remember a year when they were ripe so early.

Also picked up lots of windfall pears.

We've had apples off the tree in our garden. They're eating ones as well. We're shocked. None last year.

DS is sleeping better without the heater on in his room. He had an eczema flare up on his back which we think was triggered by getting too warm at night. His body temperature regulation is changing now he's over a year old.

And I won't be getting cold this winter. Baby no. 2 will be keeping me warm. We're due mid April. I'm looking forward to not being heavily pregnant over the summer like last time!!!
