Affordable skincare routine for Teenager

Options
My daughter, 14, has started breaking out in spots. Its not acne more a case of not washing of her makeup properly and not having a proper skincare routine. I want to get her some products for Christmas. I had looked at Liz Earle and Dermalogica and then thought, it was a ridiculous amount of money to spend, especially as I wouldn't even spend it on myself. Looking for some suggestions for good products at a cheaper price. I just need the essentials Cleanser/toner/moisturiser.

I am not keen on Clearasil type products as I think they are bit too strong/medicated for her and I don't think she needs them as I am pretty sure her problem stems from not washing off her makeup. Her skin type I would say is normal/combination.

Superdrug make thir own 'hot cloth cleanser' which is basically a dupe for the Liz Earle one. There's a vitamin e version and a radiance version and they're about £4 I think, but often on offer. Also I would look at maybe some of the bodyshop skincare (tea tree and seaweed ranges) as they are often again on offer. The tea tree toner would certainly help with the spots and then maybe the seaweed moisturiser to help with the oil (if you say she has combination skin).

Thanks Ruby_eskimo. I am currently using the asda dupe for Liz Earle and it is really good. I think I will go with the BodyShop range you recommended. They have a good offer on at the minute £25 for a £50 spend so I can get her a few bits and bobs and create a little hamper for her.
  • I would recommend superdrug's tea tree range, I believe they also do a sensitive range cleanser/toner/oil free moisturizer. Boot's own cucumber range daughter loved the smell of, but then she went cruelty free and stopped using.

If she develops problem skin, or you feel like spending more LUSH do an amazing range that does work, though it can be slightly addictive for young ladies and a bit pricey (as I found out when all 4 daughters 'discovered' LUSH!)
No buying unnecessary toiletries 2014. Epiphany on 4/4/14 - went into shop to buy 2 items, walked out with 17!

I buy my 14 yr old the simple products, tesco and asda sometimes have them on at half price so i stock up when there cheaper.
  • N-Spa at asda are really good and also pretty cheap for what they are. They do a hot cloth cleanser very similar to Liz Earle and a Clay Mask to help with breakouts.

If you wanted to spend a little more then the Yes To range is brilliant and very natural and helps combat acne or spot prone skin. Its also raved about by the younger youtube beauty guru's for a good cheaper alternative to high end products and also the Una Brennan is also really good and all under £10 and on 3 for 2 at boots same as the Yes To range. If she is getting spots even when cleansing properly i'd recommend La Roch Posey its a bit pricey for the drug store normally about £15 or so but its also on 3 for 2 most the time and really excellent especially for spot prone skin.

Also keep an eye out for deals on skincare from qvc, they always have offers for a pretty decent size set from Liz Earle and so on for £30 or so. Might seem steep but they are much better than the drugstore products that strip the skin. I started using really good skin products at a young age because my mum had them and people have always commented how lovely my skin is. Its always been clear as well until this year when its gone haywire with certain foundations.

Also worth mentioning its alot to do with diet and lifestyle spots, make sure she is taken a fish oil supplement really helps clear the skin and make your hair and nails wonderful as well.
  • Hi

I started getting really spotty skin when I was in my mid 30s for some reason and discovered Garnier Pure Active products which are amazing. I couldnt live without their Exfo-Brusher wash.

I have found that its trial and error until you get something that suits your skin though. For example that really expensive Boots skincare that is supposed to work miracles does nothing for me!

Oh and I use Seventeen BB Magic Blemish Balm as foundation and find this really good too.

There's also 7% cashback on topcashback at the moment for The Body Shop in case you wanted to buy online.

  • Johnsons cleanser & toner is great, same goes for Nivea. All very affordable. If possible, use a facial sorbet or a primer before you apply your make-up. If you're buying BodyShop products I would definitely look at the vitamin-e range - I swear by it. They sell some of the things I've mentioned above.

ALSO one of the main culprits of make-up-esque facial issues, is dirty brushes! Don't buy new ones - just clean your current ones.

My DD1 is coming up to 13 (definitely not into make up etc, prefers a football to anything else!) but I've noticed that the skin round her airline is a bit spotty, nothing major but I can see it & I gather its the oils from her hair. So I gave her a Boots Botanics range face wash & some Nivea Wipes (I use the sensitive range) to try. Her skin isn't dry but I've given her some good old Nivea for the winter as she plays a lot of football in all weathers. I'd like her to get into a good habit before she gets interested in make up!
