IT support work

I currently work fulltime troubleshooting IT problems. I am looking as a side venture to do some home IT support in evenings and weekends. Has anyone got and experience of setting up this type of small business?. Even if it was not IT just wondering where to start and target.

    1) Advertise in the local newspaper
    2) Look for work on freelancing websites

Finding customers is no easy task. If it was easy then everyone would do it.

Look at the competition there will be others in the area that do this type of work.

Don't underestimate the expectations of the potential customers.
Be clear what you can and can't do(or things you don't want to).

One issue these days is that loads are doing it often for free.

One option might be to do something on a volunteer basis to start with to build up some experience with the public.

If you do decide to do this, you may need to inform your employer.

  • Massive amount of competition, little repeat business in the consumer market. Too often consumers see computers as disposable and replace rather than fix.

Small business is a much better market to be in where both of these issues reduce significantly but competition is still high and inevitably they want office hour support
  • Do you work for a companies internal IT department or is it for a IT company/managed service provider?

IT covers so much. Do you troubleshoot hardware problems? Networks? Servers? Or are you a programmer or systems programmer?

It's hard to answer your question without knowing where your skills lie and therefore what sort of customers you might be looking for.
